An explosion at Juarez barracks near El Paso injured and captured two insurgents who had secretly entered the town. Mexican cavalry and troops were placed on alert as residents feared a siege. Reports say several Mexican soldiers were hurt and guards intensified around Col. Tamborel and Gen. Navarro.
The body of Barbara Holtsman a five year old girl was found in a Portland rooming house by the proprietress Mrs Ger tile Nelson. The deceased was the daughter of a local mechanic and had recently been sent to a putcher shop. A strange man had rented a room and the door was found locked when the proprietor checked next day. The victim lay on the bed nearly covered by bedclothes.
Bloomington professor Jay Price and Miss Emma Hansen of Goose Lake drowned in the Sangamon River near Petersburg. Authorities dragged the river for miles but failed to recover the bodies.
Mrs. Mary Caldwell mother of three children was found guilty of murdering her husband in Pittsburg Kansas and was sentenced to two years in the state prison. She claimed the killing was in self defense.
Copenhagen reports the government will dispatch warships to Greenland with orders to arrest foreign walrus hunters, mainly Americans, accused of killing thousands of walrus each year.
Two Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe passenger trains traveling between Los Angeles and San Bernardino collided two miles east of Glendora California. Several persons were slightly injured in the wreck. Authorities investigated the cause and arranged for medical aid and railroad repairs.

Des Moines Iowa lawmakers consider a $10 000 appropriation to the Iowa State Dairy association to fund scientific dairying under a seven member committee. A separate measure requires health certificates for domestic animal shipments into Iowa and fines for noncompliant carriers.

The senate judiciary committee supports allowing able bodied inmates aged 16 to 60 to work in county jails with wages paid to their families and no wage cap beyond a dollar per day. prisoners could be ball chained if escaping, and uniforms or marks not required. The House meanwhile set a pass for a Smith five mile limit bill after contentious committee and floor maneuvers with votes 61 to 34 and 66 to 29 on reinforcement and postponement. New Iowa corporations include Farmers' Shipping Co at Kimballton with 15000 capital and Farmers' Mutual Co-operative Creamery at Orange City with 10000 capital. Owens Grove Telephone Co. at Mason City is mutual.
Senator Hammill urged passage of a bill to abolish the office of school treasurer citing economic benefits. He argued past school treasurers cost Iowa about 170000 annually and that school funds sparked conflict between banks and school officers. The proposal would place all funds under the county treasurer.
The house passed the Cunningham bill by 6 to 4, giving the state agricultural department power to fix the state fair secretary salary and to take funds from state fair receipts. Beebe of Franklin proposed an amendment capping the salary at 5000 dollars per year, which was adopted. Also, Rep McCullough of Dubuque county introduced a bill to prohibit highway obstructions with penalties of 100 dollars or thirty days in jail, applying to township trustees and county supervisors for failure to remove obstructions.

Ames reports the Missouri state poultry board contest closed with over 200 entrants from 19 states. Winners include Frank E. Mixa of Ames for five acre farm plans and profit estimates. Rud H. Fire of unknown origin in the choir loft Sunday morning destroyed the $5,000 pipe organ and damaged the new First Methodist church in Waterloo by $13,000 with total loss insured. The dedicatory exercises scheduled for that day were postponed due to the blaze.
Waterloo becomes the first city in the state to complete a teeth examination of grade pupils conducted by the board of education and the superintendent. Nearly 2,000 children in West Waterloo were examined, and results will be awaited with interest.
Lieut Mumma of the seventh cavalry and commandant of cadets here is slated for promotion to captain by congressional action. He likely will serve as inspector general of the Iowa National Guard after the bill’s passage, increasing his oversight role.

Miss Maggie Hank of Bartlett is reported in a serious condition after attempting to extinguish a house fire that destroyed her home and all its contents. The incident left her with serious burn injuries.
John Gabborth Bowman, 33, secretary of the Carnegie Foundation, accepted the presidency of Iowa State University by letter to the state education board. A Columbus and Columbia alumnus, Bowman has been in Des Moines since 1904 and held his current post since 1906. Iowa State, with about 1800 students and 100 instructors, had invited him weeks earlier. Butter makers to help Barney. Forty creamery men from five states met in Des Moines to form a committee to assist the Food and Dairy Commissioner in enforcing Iowa pure food laws. The group includes J. W. Fowler Grinnell H. B. Dunlap Des Moines W. Wilcox Mason City F. A. Leighton Des Moines and J. J. Jecks. Atlantic.
Des Moines report says cold storage house owners are blamed for high winter prices on butter eggs and other produce. Henry Rhynsburger of Pella president of the Iowa Wholesale Butter and Egg Dealers association told the annual convention that steady market flow could yield year round fair prices for producers and dealers alike. Waterloo plans for a Greater Iowa industrial movement were announced by Mayor John R Rector and local business representatives at a meeting led by W W Marsh. Black Hawk county township trustees will be invited to a dinner in the city on Friday March 24 with delegations from northeastern and northern Iowa commercial bodies.
At the close of the firemen's ball Storm Lake Fire Chief A R Biddle received a gold chief's pin from veteran firefighters. He is the oldest chief by service in the United States with thirty two years leading the Storm Lake department. His company includes twelve men who have served under him for thirty years.
Des Moines reports indicate eighty per cent of Iowa will remain dry under current laws for the next five years. Of seventy two counties, prohibitory law is fully in force, sixteen have gone for saloons, ten remain undecided or in litigation.
Iowa City announces Prof. John G. Bowmar, secretary of the Carnegie Foundation, has accepted the presidency of the University of Iowa succeeding George MacLean. Bowmar will assume duties next September and will tour Europe before returning for the fall semester opening.

Brooks Grant, formerly of Hopkinton and a resident of Lowan, was badly burned when a chemical explosion in Fort Worth University laboratory blinded him and endangered his life. He suffered severe facial burns and may die from the injuries.
Telegram from Florida reports the death of George W. Nicholson, a leading Denison businessman long involved in butter and eye wear trade in Vail Grand Junction and Denison.
George Podmore aged 23 was seriously injured after being thrown from an armoise horse. The animal stepped on his face, crushing his jaw and knocking out most of his teeth. He was taken to Mercy Hospital Des Moines.
Decorah Revered minister John Williard, longtime figure in the region, suffered a stroke in Chicago causing paralysis. The community reports he is under care and improving gradually.
