Chairman John E Murphy and associate chairmen Fred Lenon outline how funds fund comfort items calls medical records and family communications for Viet Nam era troops. Governor Harold Hughes kicks off the 1968 Easter Seal drive with the first contribution to the campaign. Lynne Marie Vogel, eight, of Gilbertville, Iowa, named Easter Seal Sweetheart, is handicapped from birth. The campaign supports Iowa services such as speech and physical therapy, loan equipment, braces, artificial limbs, vocational training for homebound handicapped, and Camp Sunnyside. The goal is 300,000 dollars, with over ninety percent allocated to Iowa crippled children and adults.

The Library Club announced poster contest results from the Book Fair. In the Junior Senior High School group Beverly Friske won first, Cathy Lewigan second, Debby Wilcox and Kathy Zinn tied for third, with Linda Johnson getting honorable mention. Fifth and Sixth graders saw Kay Willer first, Greta Hede second, Carol Borchers third, and honorable mentions for Evelyn Hitamann and Karen Gronameyer. Awards to be presented at the Book Pair event.
Five students Cynthia Apply Leola Leekly Gail Garlsian Tim Coyle and Rodmay Green under Mr Jacobs returned to Akron for the year in a school debate program. The team attended a Sioux Falls College workshop a South Dakota University round a Morningside College round in Sioux City a Westmar College round in LeMangang and the Northweet district tournament with a student body assembly. The group earned about 25 percent success and was praised for progress and respectful conduct.
John R. Goldman, Sioux City district manager, announces higher annual and monthly earning limits for full Social Security benefits beginning 1968. Beneficiaries age 52 or older may earn more without losing benefits. a March 20, 1968, Sioux City Office visit at Hawarden City Hall will offer guidance and information.
The State Services for Crippled Children will hold a diagnostic clinic in Spencer on March 20 and 27 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 14th and Fremont. Eligible patients are under 21 with crippled conditions from Plymouth County, referred by a physician or dentist, with no examination fee.
The Future Teachers of America held a February 28 meeting led by President Chris Gustafson. Plans for a March 22 masquerade ball were discussed, and committees reported progress. Members voted on attending the State TVA convention in Des Moines. Group activities covered GRA basketball rosters with multiple team captains and players listed.
Students report progress in reading and math with word attack drills and two figure numerals. They plan a weekly school newspaper printed by students, using curive writing, a Vectograph, and a gelatin duplicator, with classroom banking and checks. State Board of Public Instruction co sponsors seven workshops this month to inform commercial and district mechanics about new Iowa lighting regulations for school buses. Instructors from the Transportation Division and the Iowa Association of Pupil Transportation Supervisors will lead sessions beginning 9 20 p m at various bus garages on Saturdays March 16 23 28 30 and at Cedar Falls LeMars Southeast Polk and Cedar Rapids. The changes require two double lamp assemblies with amber and red lights mounted above the windshield and a steering column mounted actuation switch.

August Henke returns from Chicago to build a livery barn on a burned site. Funeral held for Peter Nygard who died March 7 1908. Births include a son to Mr and Mrs Raish and a daughter to Mr and Mrs Hoffman and a son to Mr and Mrs Bixler all in March 1908. Geo Kirstein invented a Monarch Dige Sharpener attachment enabling disc cutting. service by Kirstein offered at $5 per sheet or $3 per set. Mr and Mrs LeRoy Doty visit Spencer on a wedding tour and stay with relatives west of Akrot.
