Westfield community notes record visits from Ray Wilton, Lavon Hough, and various relatives, 4-H club tours, a Sunnyside meeting planned, and a large list of local residents calling on friends. A Goodwill drive is announced and a twentieth anniversary reunion at Westfield School closes with attendees from multiple states.
Way Back Yonder items gleaned from Akron Register Tribune files recall 60 years ago notes on George Geiger opening a news stand in a post office lobby births such as a 10 pound son to Henry and wife northwest of town and various local happenings. It lists deaths, marriages, farm plans, band and athletic activities, D. E. Kennedy moving to LeMars as deputy county recorder, and civic events, including a fatal drowning of Harvey Tooker and paving contracts in Akron.
A local class decides to meet again on the second Sunday in July 1966 at Akron park to honor their twenty fifth anniversary. Attendees include Mrs. Karl Jans and Jerry and Janice Jans of Akron, Mr. and Mrs. Lesley Anderson and Maxing Shearer of Ac ton, Erle and Suzan of Ac ton, Kurt Maredd and Matthew of Sioux City, and Tony Raub with Anne Tracy of Grand Forks. Several members, including Mrs. Charles Morehead and Mya, could not attend.
A raft rescue near Adaville saved one boy after a lake mishap as others escaped. Akron softball announces six teams for summer league while bids seek for school auditorium addition. Duane Halvorsen survived a corn slide rescue with Dr. Mattison directing the revival. Mrs. Frede Boggess, 58, died of a stroke in Sioux City, a former Akron resident. Obituaries note Kallsen and 1961 law-era figures, with prison parole denials for two killers tied to a 20-year-old breakout. Baseball results show Akron losing 9 to 7 to Kingsley in Tri-State action. C W Elliott of the Veterans Administration Office in Sioux City Iowa said today that war orphans may qualify for Orphans Educational Assistance. The War Orphans law allows VA Educational Assistance for a child whose parent died from disease or injury incurred in line of duty during active service. The VA may pay $110 a month for up to 36 months of full time institutional attendance.
The Living Word informs of Bible school at 8 a.m. worship at 11 a.m. Lord's Supper sermon led by Minister Dean R. Orris. Fresh supply of typewriter and copying paper for sale at Register-Tribune office.
Local 41 Farmers Union plans a Monday July 8 gathering at 8 oclock at Sig Sommervold home. Cherokee visitors, relatives in attendance include Arnold Brunjeen and Grant family. Minneapoli s game crowds and weather boosts crops oats soybeans corn progress. Akrons Dirks Motor Co marks 88th Anniversary Sale with discounted used cars. A June 25 picnic at Akron Park honored several families and relatives from Glendale Whittier Chatsworth and Sioux City.
Ed Wisnow of Valparaiso and guests, Mr and Mrs Rollo Baker, are mentioned in a social note. Wesley Methodist church hosts a Thursday evening event with ice cream cake and pie and a lawn dessert before a band concert. Other notes mention births, travels to Minneapolis for baseball, a golden wedding anniversary, and sparklers safety warnings by Herron.
State Fire Marshal Ed Herron warns parents to supervise sparkler use as Iowa readies a first exposure for many youngsters. He stresses sparklers are not harmless and cites two summer burn injuries to children already reported in Iowa.
The Border Belles 42 Club gathered June 19 1961 at Delores Priske home for a safety themed meeting. Twelve members answered roll call. Norma Sie bens and Barbara Henrich spoke on 4 H Camp while Mary Kemme demonstrated summer time floats Delores Friske showed butter cake and Susan Anderson demonstrated ill flour.
