Feeding Cows Now Like Winter Rations Warns Iowa Dairy Expert
Dr. C Y Cannon head of Dairy Husbandry at Iowa State College advises dairy cows receive winterlike rotations using nonlegume hay and grain supplementation. Grain feeding aids milk flow and cow condition says Cannon
The article advises feeding grain now to sustain milk production into next fall and winter. It notes grain better cools the cow and should be paired with ample drinking water. A suggested mix is four parts ground corn four parts ground cara and four parts high protein concentrate such as packed soybeans. It also includes a public notice about dogs killing live stock and a local livestock trade pitch.
