Special Correspondence notes a Westfield Guild monthly meeting on June 18 at Tess Buryanek home with Neva Dennison and Kathy Hoffman assisting. Westfield Discussion Club met Wednesday at Leonard Buryanek home with Gert Blum and Tess Buryanek serving. Several local families and visitors are recorded, including arrivals, open houses, weddings, and birthday observances amid extended travel notes and health updates.
The Class of 1943 from Westfield Community School held its 20 year reunion on June 23 at the Westfield School with a picnic in the cafeteria. Twenty one members graduated. sixteen attended. Special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Jordan from Linn Grove. Awards honored Warren Hummel for farthest distance, Marisetta Anderson for longest marriage, Helen Buryanek for largest family, Lorraine Shearer for youngest child, Merlen Null and Louis Conway for remaining bachelors. Attending list includes Marietta Anderson, Helen Buryanek, Margaret Coleman, Arlene Dreeszen, Kenneth Hasenbank, Warren Hummel, Richard Johnson, Lois McInnin, Audrey Milner, Lowell Morehead, Merlen Null, Lorraine Shearer, Charles Swalley, Lucille Moffatt, Louis Conway, Jean Dennison, Paul Gant, and others. A note mentions a fresh supply of typewriter paper for the Regis ter Tribune office.
Akron Register-Tribune notes a 16 to 9 baseball win by Akron over Sioux City Air Base with Harold Peck hitting a home run and two triples. Recaps a reunion, births, deaths, marriages, and local events including a statewide blackout, a wet election, and local sports results across 1933 to 1988 with multiple named individuals and places.
Four days in New York City followed a Niagara Falls stop after a thrift car trip by Akron students Bernard Klauer and a classmate from Iowa State College. The Akron High School issued its first annual in June 1943, a 96 page booklet titled Torpedo. In baseball Akron defeated Elk Point two to six at Neary's Park with Ted Cummins pitching. Miss Dorothy Ann Post wed Harold E. Collins of Vermillion on December 22, 1922 at Corner Bluffs Indiana. he has coached athletics locally. Mrs J R Kerr, an early local resident, died.
Mrs. Kerr of Union County died June 18 1923 at her son's home in Akron aged 78 years 6 months and 20 days. Survived by five sons J R T J J A W F F Kerr and three daughters Mrs J E Nixon Mia Olaf Hofstbach and Misa Margaret Kerr. Funeral at Akron M Behareh led by Rev G J Poppelheimer. Burial Riverside cemetery. Local items note heavy rains washing roads and fields and local business mentions Buick agency and graveling trial on a street plus a hospital hill incident involving Chas Anderson and Hawarden baker.
Contractor W C G Anderson began the concrete foundation for a new Scandinavian Lutheran church here. A six day Chautaugua in August 23 to 28 was booked for Akron. Dr L L Bowie planned to quit local practice with his family returning to Moorhead Iowa and he would pursue a Chicago medical course. Bert H Smith, former Akron boy, aided in a Glendale Oregon bank robbery where $3290 was stolen. Wm Rowan of Toledo claimed the body of his son Bert found dead in the Henke feed barn. Marriage of Paul Wendt and Nelle Morten on June 26 1913 at Vermillion South Dakota. Newborn daughters reported for several families with dates of June 1913 and June 1918.
Frank T. Nye associate editor and political writer of the Cedar Rapids Gazette is named 1964 Red Cross Volunteer National Fund Vice Chairman Yor Tows. He will oversee fund campaign planning for Iowa and appoint consultants for chapter, state, and national campaigns. Nye has served Linn County Red Cross in multiple roles and chairs public information efforts.

A State University of Iowa analysis by Margaret Nolte found 1962 graduates from the top 10 percent of classes sent 86.1 percent of boys and 80.6 percent of girls to college, up from 1947 rates of 68 and 60 percent. Among top quarter graduates 79.3 percent of boys and 72.7 percent of girls entered college, rising from 52.6 and 36.2 percent in 1947. The study also notes many farmer sons and daughters pursued higher education, and 1962 summer programs served 80,336 pupils with 89 percent of districts offering summers.

Mrs. Ern Hemphill of Beresford recalls a near fatal bee sting incident on her farm southeast of Centerville. While gathering eggs she was stung on the leg by two bees and suffered toxic poisoning. An Akron egg man aided, oxygen was administered by Dr. C. C. Pascale, and hospital care at Viborg followed. Richard Beech, an Akron Produce Co. driver, was praised for quick action aiding the victim before ambulance transport.
Help wanted by day in Akron and a loan deadline advisory for 1962 crop soybeans in Plymouth County. Items include a sewing machine trade offer, Electrolux vacuum sale, and a person seeking work or cash to take over payments. Also loan maturity date July 31 for soybeans with redeemption details and county ASCS notes.
