Westfield Special Correspondent compiles a long list of attendees at a Sunnyside picnic honoring Gerald Kozlon and family from Hawthorne California, with numerous Sioux City, Akron, Moville and Fort Dodge connections. The report records dinners, visits, travel, and family events including Father’s Day gatherings, hospital shifts, and a calf incident on A road.
Mrs Winnie Bliss returned with her son Robert to Tulsa Texas for the Moniger family reunion held at the Akron Legion Hall on June 14. A string of local visits and events follow, including watch recovery on a Ray Welch farm, new baby announced for Westfield friends, and various relatives visiting from Akron Cherokee and Omaha. Notable notes include Mark Dreeszen returning from Washington to visit, Father Stone’s welcome party, summer staffing at Hawks grocery, and attendance at a music camp by Westfield students at Morningside College June 21 28.
A 4-H workshop on July 1 at the Fairgrounds Girls 4-H Building will begin at 2:00 with an evening session at 7:30. Janice Fulton Janet McNaughton and Shirley Eyres will lead discussions on Educational Presentations planning topic selection and methods to help members with their projects. All 4-H members leaders and clubs are urged to attend and bring at least one representative to each session.
A two day Iowa State University short course for lamb feeders is set for July 1–2 in Ames. The program covers feedlot layout contracting for feeder and finished lambs lamb marketing yield grading market news and ration formulation with a panel on rations and another on lamb procurement. Registration costs 10 dollars and includes meals.
The Plymouth county historical society hosts the Old Settlers picnic and program on Saturday July 11 at Merrill, in conjunction with Merrill Town and Country Daze. Walter Held chairs the event at the Merrill old school gym following the 1969 Le Mars centennial festivities.
Chatsworth Chats reports a sequence of social visits and Father's Day gatherings. Henry Collmann accompanied by his son Colin traveled to Hawarden on a business trip, while many locals hosted relatives from Akron Sioux City LeMars and Omaha. The Congregation held a farewell supper and sermon for Pastor Hostager as he moves to Belmond Iowa.
The Iowa State Department of Public Instruction with Iowa State University units announces four summer programs for school food service staff. Courses cover management, basic preparation, nutrition, sanitation and cost control, with sessions at the Ames campus and local area vocational schools. Courses run June 22 to July 31, with topics including menu planning, personnel, procurement, community relations, and meal requirements.
Craig Faulkner of Akron Iowa has been accepted into the Auto Tech two year program at Southern State College Springfield SD for fall 1970, leading to an Associate in Applied Science. Dr Glen Rasmussen announces Dean's Honor List for 1969-70, including Michelle K Garvin of Akron Iowa. Morningside College in Sioux City Iowa enrolls about 1,400 undergrads.
A new 4-H Club starts in North Sioux City with about fifteen members at the first meeting. Plans call for new clubs at McCook Lake and Jefferson, with roughly 145 youths showing interest in joining 4-H in these areas. Entomology notes cover gnat and mosquito control methods, recommendations for Malathion and Sevin mixtures, and aerial Dibrom use around city and farm areas, plus army worm scouting guidance for farmers and a call to report infestations.
Sunday saw strong turnout at the Akron Golf course opening with many first time players. The event fostered camaraderie, especially among women, signaling healthy community support. A permanent clubhouse plan promises social functions and an ideal clubhouse location to attract members.
The Iowa Conservation Commission urges delaying mowing on roadside ditches waterways and government ground through July to aid nesting pheasants. ASCS will allow government ground to wait until after July 1 before first mowing pending verification by local agents. Program aims for a strong pheasant season.
At the June 1 meeting the Alcester City Council approved extending one way traffic on Iowa Street from the Alcester Feed & Grain to the county shed, with the change taking effect July 1.
Public calls for balanced coverage of health care. AMA and National Medical Association demand equal time to present medicine's side after a national network documentary on American medicine was seen as biased. Spokesmen assert the public deserves the full truth.
Western Iowa Experimental Farm hosts a July 9 field day at 9 a.m. four miles east of Castana with ISU and USDA presentations on Crownvetch grazing alfalfa management cool season grasses and watershed management. Topics include forage crops rations soil losses and animal nutrition. Everyone interested is invited.

Johnson Jr Homemakers met June 15 at Jackie Betsworth’s home with 16 members present. Donna Allen called the meeting to order at 2 pm. pledges led. reports read. Joan Warenhorst named candidate for County Council. Karen Brown chosen as Fair Queen candidate. discussions on Junior Camp, achievement day on July 20, and fair skit committee members listed. a Sioux Center tour planned for June 27 at Ella Willer’s 9:30 am. bake sale and family picnic discussed. 4-H flag pledge led by Judy Hennin. demonstrations given. lunch served by Jackie and her mother.
Scattered 4 H members met at Akron Park for the annual picnic and tour. Plans were made for a July 5 picnic and swimming party at Akron Park and pool.
