Old pine trees at Milwaukee depot removed after sixty years

For decades two box elder trees shaded the north end of Milwaukee’s depot grounds. One was dead and the other rotted, posing a danger to vehicles and people. The city street department cut them down with a chainsaw and hauled them away, changing the depot’s familiar scene.

Akron Community School District map and election notice

A special election set for Monday June 29 1959 from noon to 7 pm will vote on forming the Akron Community School District. Voters from Akron Independent, Johnson Liberty Portland Preston and Westfield townships will cast ballots at designated precinct locations. a majority district vote in five of six districts plus overall Akron ISD approval is required. Ballots and supplies were mailed to precinct chairmen and a map shows four voting areas plus at large representation.

Farm Storage Expanded Through Loans

More than 10 million bushels of grain storage capacity were added on U S farms in the first quarter of 1959 through the Department of Agriculture storage facility loan program. Loans totaling over 2 million dollars were made to about 2,700 farmers, with 182 farmers borrowing 268 thousand dollars to finance mobile crop drying equipment. Since 1949 the program has added 412 million bushels of storage capacity and over 5 million dollars in drying equipment. Iowa officials remind the public of 30 beaches and multiple pools, urging swim at supervised areas with lifeguards.
