Westfield Man Dies After Long Illness
Basil Hoffman longtime Westfield resident died Wednesday evening June 14 at Akron Hospital after an extended illness. He was 60 years 10 months 5 days and had lived in Plymouth County all his life. He married Gladys Campbell on February 14 1927 in Sioux City and worked in Westfield drilling and repair. A St Catherine Catholic Church member he is survived by his widow two sons a daughter two sisters two half-sisters one half-brother nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral service was held Saturday at St Patrick Catholic Church Akron with interment in the church cemetery.

Sixty five Sioux City Diocese women attended a National Council of Catholic Women regional meeting at Notre Dame Indiana. Akron leaders Mrs W B Gent and Mrs Gerald Henrich along with eight Northwest Deanery ladies organized area meetings to explain the Vatican II laity apostolate program. Akron Westfield hosts area meeting June 27 at Parish Hall with Ha werden and Ellendale Catholic Women as invited panelists.

May data show yearling steers and heifers priced higher than mid-April but still below year-ago levels. 800-900 lb steers around 26 to 27.50 at Sioux City, lighter cattle 23.60 to 24.50, and 500-600 lb yearlings 23 to 30. Futures for 650-750 lb steers in the Southwest 24.50 to 25.00 for Nov 15 delivery. 650-800 lb steers 25 to 26 for Aug to Nov 4. Immanuel Lutheran church Bible school groups sang for us this week with Carol Hanis on piano. Fern Beaulieu visited from Colorado, and Mrs Burnett stayed at the Pridie residence for two nights. Many relatives and friends from Sioux City Chicago Wisconsin and various towns visited or called on, including Marie Degen Tim and Kirk Banks, Joe McCorkell, Ada Mull, and Mrs. Gibbons. Local residents attended or hosted visitors from Newton Benson Chicago Glenville Oakland and Sioux Center.

Miniature Biography of Ethel Gady Thorson
Ethel Gady Thorson born in Clinton Iowa in 1882 moved to Highmore South Dakota at age three. She taught country school rode three miles daily and saved for Drake University. In Akron she taught and directed plays raising funds for books. Married Ed Thorson who owned a drugstore he died in 1938 leaving her management. She had two children seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Day on the moon is fourteen times as long as on earth.
