Breast Cancer Screening Van Heads Through South Dakota

Union County extension homemakers sponsor a mobile breast cancer screening program across the state in partnership with the South Dakota division of the American Cancer Society and Extension Homemakers Clubs. The van will travel eastward using thermography and physical breast exams. Dr. JoAnn Haberman will direct the effort. results go to the patient’s doctor. Pre-registration will guarantee examination, with 250 women seen weekly. If registrations warrant, a second van will serve southern South Dakota.

Trinity women head to ALCW convention in Decorah

Trinity women will attend the Iowa District American Lutheran Church Women’s Convention at Luther College Fieldhouse Decorah June 25 and 26. Featured speaker Dale Evans Rogers will be a star witness of faith, with Esther Onstad Bible teacher and author also appearing. National ALCW President Margaret Bauman and Executive Director Marge Wold will address the event, joined by Dr. Kenneth Priebe and Alice Smith. Joyce Olson will preside.

Monday featured a film About a Century tracing American changes since 1876. A Tuesday project on magnetic mice continued in several rooms. Friday's coffee hour honored Fathers Day with Betty Jacobs of HiWay Cafe donating doughnuts. Church groups and L C W members led singing and Bingo with prizes. Numerous visitors from several towns attended, and church school pupils read Bible verses to residents. Donations, gifts, and treats included strawberries, flag day favors, and a marshmallow center flag. Continuous social events and personal visits marked the week.

Girls State at UNI draws 304 students for yearly session

Cindy Toben of Akron joined 303 other high school students for the 29th Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State at the University of Northern Iowa Campus, ending June 15. Sponsored by Hoschler Post 186, delegates formed two parties and elected local and state officials. Barbara Noe of Grinnell, 1973 Governor, opened the session. 1972 Governor Carolyn Jones of Carroll gave the keynote. State officials and staff guided lectures on city, county, and state government, drugs, and parliamentary procedure.

Akron youth CRD program to start June 19 meets at City Hall

Kris Puetz of the Plymouth County Extension Service invites Akron youths aged 9 to 14 to join the 4-H CRD program this summer.
