The Register-Gribune announces subscription rates: 1 year two dollars 6 months one dollar and 3 months sixty cents. The paper is published every Thursday in Akron and is entered at the post office as second class mail matter on September 26 1901.
Two grandsons of Dale Hunter Lawrence Brown of Des Moines and Lee Cooper of Sioux City left Monday morning on a bicycle trip to Minneapolis to spend a week with aunt Hazel Lindberg. Lawrence arrived Friday night. they’ll camp out and travel about five days. The story and photos appeared in the Sioux City Journal Sunday.
The report mentions a child treated at City Hospital after iodine entered the eye. Clifford Jensen, once a Cassen farm resident, recalls being among the smaller children when the family moved about twenty five to thirty years ago. Mrs. Ernest Johnson formerly Alma Stevens has returned home after a brief hospital stay for a minor operation, with a niece staying briefly and Mrs. Johnson recovering well.
Miss Avis Buim visits relatives near Alcester and with Fickbohms and Larsons. Numerous guests travel among Garland households including Nygards, Hamiltons, Thompsons, and Skinners. Carrol Hamilton injures ribs while fixing a tractor. Hubert Thompson assists after. Community events include club gatherings, a bridge afternoon, and a Roll of officers for As You Like It club. Plymouth county land sale adds to local economy as Earl Michael buys 185 acres for 27.50 an acre.
Mrs John Murphy and children of Sioux Falls visited her parents in Westfield. Ladies Aid planned a rummage sale June 27 in the Bank building with ice cream and cake. Meetings hosted by Arch Lilly and Mrs Wayne Lilly are noted. Various locals traveled to Des Moines Columbus Junction and Sioux City for visits. Clifford Warren, Monroe Wis, is Montg Ward assistant manager in Monroe. Sylvia Crill, now with Walgren in Chicago, vacations with her mother at Riversioux Park. Free movies attract larger crowds each Tuesday. Edith Chapman attends Bueng Vista College Storm Lake summer session.
Union Creek News reports Sunday services at 11 o'clock with Sunday school at 10, notes a Missionary program at Luther Hall on Friday, June 16, and a rescheduled Ladies Aid meeting June 21. Hostesses are Mrs Albert Anderson Mrs E A Hultgren and Hannah Sellberg. A serious accident injures Ione Hultgren inhaling corn chaff in a grain bin. mother seeks medical care from Akron to Sioux City hospital where she improves.
A hospital update notes the young girl remains under care for pneumonia risk but is improving. Local ladies hosted a miscellaneous shower at Mrs. Kenneth Nygard’s home in Akron with gifts and lunch. Amelia Gunderson won a health poster prize at Elk Point. Several visits and gatherings occurred, including word of Niagara Falls travel, Luther League delegates, and a Friday play by the 4 H club at Mount Hope School.
A WPA project begins replacing surveyors corners across Plymouth County with cement markers each half mile on section lines. Engineers appointed by the government lead twenty WPA workers. Five percent of the cost is county borne for markers and transportation. project span is about two years with $25 000 allotted funding.
The Rose-breasted Grosbeak appears in early May. The male is rose-red on the breast with a black head and back, while the female shows browns and white. Nests are built in woodland edge thickets with three to five pale-green eggs. Both parents feed the young over a 14 day period. About half the diet is plant matter, with insects and potato beetles among the favorites. This material prepared by Ellis A. Hicks, wildlife extension specialist, Iowa State College.
Engineers and assistants will locate and mark section and half section corners across the county. The project doubles marker count from the old system and uses a county truck for transport. Many wooden posts have rotted and been replaced. some corners lack markers. Cement markers will be placed at every corner, even off highway lines in the southwest area where roads do not follow section lines.
