A state safety report shows 176 drivers died in Iowa crashes through April, with 108 having 10 or more years of experience. Ages ranged from teens to 60s, and 22 drivers were drinking, six asleep, four ill, and three had contributing physical defects.
A 25 ton granite boulder unearthed during grading for the Des Moines Freeway will move this summer to the Southern Hills area for display. Professor Wilfrid G. Richards calls it an erratic likely carried by ancient ice sheets. Camp Sunnyside in Polk County opens a new pool for crippled children with an 80 thousand dollar pledge from the Iowa Federation of Labor and many unions contributing labor and facilities. The camp offers five 12 day sessions this summer at 97.50 per camper, with activities including an artificial lake and a Huckleberry Finn island, and a staff of 47.

Years ago nearly 4000 votes were cast in the June 1 1982 Plymouth county primary. J G Miller was renominated Fifth district supervisor on the Republican ticket amid doubt over the Democrat challenger. Akron teams won three games as Seniors beat Strub 4 to 1 Juniors defeated Hinton 19 to 6 and Merrill 9 to 6. A 287000 gallon oiling of roads was reported. A heavy rain produced a funnel cloud with no damage. Births include a daughter to Mr and Mrs Richard Milner June 5 1982 and another daughter to Mr and Mrs Donald Neal June 8 1932. The Akron band gave its first summer concert under Prof A T Ireland. Obituaries noted Mrs Aug Hein 72 who died June 10 1942. Local notices include marriages and housekeeping on a farm north of town. City physician restricted meetings as diphtheria cases appeared.
