Americans are urged to fly the U S flag from Flag Day June 14 through Independence Day July 4, a 21 day vigil. A concurrent two minute bell ringing at 2:00 p m EDT on July 4 will accompany the Liberty Bell moment in Philadelphia.

Members of Akron TOPS 893 watched See You Lighter and Calories Enough is Enough during a Wednesday May 26 meeting. All three Akron TOPS clubs were represented and a brief business session followed the film viewings. The weekly best loser posted an 8 percent weight loss.

Plymouth county Farm Bureau women sponsor a milk made magic contest on Tuesday, June 22, during June dairy month. Open to all county cooks with six categories including main dishes and desserts. Recipes must include dairy ingredients. judging focuses on taste, nutrition, originality, ease, appearance, and purity.
Nursing home activity includes visits by Harry and Minnie Johnson to Ed Nelson in Westfield, Minnie at Esther Ferguson luncheon, and several residents visiting relatives in Le Mars for eye tests. Local groups including the American Legion and Baptist church ladies hosted events and outings, with multiple visits among residents and friends.
A series of Sunday visits and celebrations marked Joyce Puhl’s graduation from Hawarden High School. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Jerome Puhl, Mr and Mrs Lowell Hillrichs, Linda of Craig, the Klaus, Kaskie, Kramper, Feldhacker, Stephenson, Schmitz, Collmann and Moller families, plus others from Hawarden and neighboring towns. Valerie Dierks of Akron will attend Girls State at the University of Northern Iowa, with Cherie Toben as alternate.

Miss Carol Ballinger of Jefferson. Mr and Mrs Dan Searls with Ken, Tom and Bill. Joy Dirks, Jay and Janelle. and Mr and Mrs Loren Jorgensen of Sioux City came for the evening.
Alcester woman Mrs Ella Lewison will celebrate her 90th birthday with an open house at Peace Lutheran church Alcester from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday June 13. A program will be held at 3 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring relatives and friends for the event and potluck afterward at the Beech home Judy and Allen avenue. Memorial Day weekend visits include relatives from Omaha Arkansas Denison Sioux City Akron and other nearby towns. Also noted is the graduation of Thomas A Woskoff from Edina West High School on June 10.
The Akron Commercial club sponsored a Gay 90s Bicentennial poster contest won by Janelle Heeren for first prize of 5 dollars, Laurie Dennison second with 3 dollars, and Debbie Rollins third with 2 dollars. Several students participated under Phil Bradbury, art instructor, with posters placed in local businesses. A weekend visit and Memorial weekend gatherings drew families from Addison Illinois and Omaha Nebraska to Akron.
