Plymouth County Old Settlers Picnic and Services

The Plymouth County Old Settlers Historical Society will hold its annual picnic and meeting on Saturday August 5 at Westfield Congregational Church with a 12:30 basket lunch and 1:30 program of speakers and music. A special Old Time service is planned for Sunday July 30. Visitors welcomed.

Westfield Congregational Church History Notes

Plans for a Congregational Church in Westfield began May 30 1898 at the Spawing home. The 1898-1995 timeline covers Sunday school led by Coleman Harrington, Ladies Aid Society activities, land gift, and 16 charter members. The building finished February 1899, dedicated April 9 1899, with later repairs in 1953 and renovations including a kitchen and larger Sunday school space. A July 30 service marks the historical theme with a 9:00 a.m. service and coffee tour afterward.

Akron and Westfield Men Register for Military Service

Fifty years ago the government published names and numbers of Akron and Westfield males aged 21 to 31 who registered for military service. Among the 2 328 registrants, number 1 was George Vinton Adams of Akron and number 2 328 was Frank Louis Waterbury of Westfield. Akron’s baseball team lost to Adaville 8 to 2 at Rivers Sioux Park. Monsignor W A Pape was honored at St Joseph church in LeMars with many Catholic dignitaries including Bishop Gaprigan of Sioux City. John Von Hagel nearly drowned in the Big Sioux River swimming.

Akron Man Dies After Appendectomy At Local Hospital

Thomas L. Burnight Sr. 58, pioneer Akron businessman, died July 22 1917 at Akron Hospital after an appendectomy. He came to Plymouth County around 1877 with parents John C. Burnight and spouse Kathryn survived by wife, son, three brothers, one sister, six half-brothers, one half-sister. Funeral at St Patrick's Church with burial in church cemetery.

Years Ago: Tragght, Trautt Killed In Mt Vernon Yard Accident

A 59 year old former resident, James Trautt, was killed July 7 1907 in the railroad yards at Mt Vernon Ohio. He led a large farm near Chesterville and is survived by his wife and several children. Also noted is Geo C Eyland becoming cashier of the First National Bank and moving his family from Sioux City. Heavy rains hindered final corn cultivation while H A Ervin planned to open a barber shop and bath parlor in the new opera house basement. Jacob Huckert 78 formerly of Union County South Dakota died July 13 1907 at his Marcus Town home leaving a large surviving family.

Secretary Orville Freeman announced major provisions for the 1968 Wheat Program, nearly identical to 1967. The plan aims to ensure ample wheat supply and farm income, with total 1968 wheat income around the 1967 level and about $600 million higher than pre-1965 Act programs.

Creel Census Shows Iowa Lake Fish Harvest Totals

A 1966 creel census for Spirit Canter Best and West Okoboji Lakes reports 875 705 fish weighing 387 166 pounds from 157 258 angling trips lasting 441 003 hours. Average 5.57 fish per trip at 1.99 per hour across 12 species led by bullheads. West Okoboji produced most fish. December to February accounted for 68 percent of its harvest. Emergency Aid Programs Detailed for Disaster Hit Farmers

Ralph Smith of the ASC urges county committees to survey flood and disaster damage and guide eligible farmers to emergency aid under current laws. Provisions include cost share for debris removal, terrace restoration, grassed waterways, and erosion controls, plus allowance to plant covered crops and still receive price supports.
