Akron reminiscences note wrecks births and baseball scores

Wayne Back Yonder tally recalls injuries near Brunsville a car roll over after a near collision. Akron baseball beats Kingsley 6 to 3 in 11 innings and loses to Sioux Center 6 to 3. Died notes include John T. Buryanek Dan Welch and others. Various birth marriages and local events from 1942 to 1982 appear with weather and farm notes.

Local notes reflect a century ago Akron era history

Twenty and sixty years ago this week recall injuries and births Albert Fickbohm at ten hurt after a grindstone accident in 1912 Mrs Hd King longtime Portland township resident died near Swift Current in 1912 Portland township voters eyed separation from Akron and officials planned a November election Heavy rainfall on July 20 1912 drenched Akron streets and basements Union Creek Lutheran church added a new section and held a dedication. In later years a fire near Whitfield hardware was narrowly contained and several births and a cemetery revival were noted. A Country of Town pick won 32 to 21 in a local pick-up game with May and Port on the mound.

Union County Farm Bureau Monthly Meeting Report

The Union County Farm Bureau met July 23 with President Russell Hansen presiding. Plans discussed include a July 27 meeting in Centerville at 8 15 p m to gather ideas for growing the South Dakota Farm Bureau, a film showing by Elmore Leckvold on Florida and the southern states at the Flower and Talent Show July 30, and a Meet the Candidates night set for September 24 at Elk Point auditorium. Bread baking contest October 29 at Alcester and a booth for Achievement Days were also discussed. The next regular meeting is October 1 at Clarence Staum’s home.

Plymouth County Farm Winners Named in Soil Awards

La Vern M. Fensner and Glen Groth, Ed Wendt and Donald Brown, all of Plymouth County, will compete in the Regional contest of Iowa’s Town Soil Conservation Achievement Awards program. Winners from three divisions will advance to a regional meet, with a sweepstakes to follow. Groth operates a 240 acre Kingsley area farm. Wendt and Gabel run a 280 acre Merrill area operation. Brown farms 320 acres northwest of Merrill.
