My Picture Window at the Farm

A poem by Jennie Lilly We hear about picture windows in modern homes yet this one is an old fashioned window with a broad view of tulips trains robins and birds. Neighbors pass by as birds build nests while other birds like black birds turtle doves and orioles contribute music from spring to night. The speaker cherishes trees fields sky and a sunset with moon and stars as the only view needed.

James Pearce Kelley, 52, a LeMars Democrat and attorney, named by Governor Erba to the 21st Iowa judicial district replacing Leo Lampman. Appointment effective Sept 2. Kelley graduates Iowa 1984, served in Navy, partner with J T Keenan, seven children, former district bar president, Iowa Bar board member, and active in Crippled Children society and local civic groups. Body of man found beside Great Northern track north of Dalton

A transient’s body was found near the Great Northern railroad track north of Dalton with an apparent head wound. letters addressed to Walter T. Wilson of Ogdensburg New York were found in his pockets. The item reflects 60 years ago events including building, property sales, a buggy accident, births, and local news items from Union County and Akron.

The 1962 Iowa Publisher Directory details more than 500 newspapers and broadcasting stations. Published by the University of Iowa School of Journalism, it lists names, locations, executives, circulation, advertising rates, call letters, staff, and locations for 46 dailies, 878 weeklies and semiweeklies, plus 12 TV stations and 79 AM FM radio outlets. Des Moines leads with extensive outlets. Sioux City follows. Single copies are $1 from the university.

Akron budget adoption and council action noted 1962

Akron Iowa council met July 24 1962 to adopt the budget after hearing taxpayers none spoke. Verle Barwick Joseph Tratzig and Roy Nielsen voted aye while Mayor Clarence Hummel and others presided. Bills approved include Akron Register Tribune publication and various local suppliers.
