Early Pioneer Tales From Hinton Gazette Notes
C W Herman recalls 1869 homesteading from Oyens to LeMars with brother Fred and mother. They faced scarce transportation, unloaded 2x4s by heaviest man, hauled nails by keg, and hid loads along Willow Creek. Slough names arose from travelers’ mishaps, ox teams ruled farming, grasshopper years tested hunger, Floyd timber was mere underbrush, and Sioux City served as the nearest land office.
