Westfield News notes a busy week of locals traveling and visitors. Families welcome new arrivals and shifts, with completions on homes and salon openings, plus hospital and travel updates across nearby towns and states.
I thank my relatives neighbors and friends for the many cards flowers pantry supplies and visits while I was a patient at St Luke Hospital and at my home. Thanks to Dr Boden and Rev Sandvik for their visits. All kindnesses were greatly appreciated. Mrs Henry Helmrichs
A local game saw Chatsworth defeat Hawarden 7 to 5 last Tuesday evening at Chatsworth. The note filled with multiple social calls lists visitors and gatherings at Akron Hawarden Sioux City and surrounding towns including Lake Okoboji and Pipestone with various families hosting meals and paying greetings.
Funeral services for 87 year old Christian Rustin of Soldier Iowa were held July 12 at the Soldier Lutheran Church with Rev. Arnold Mathison officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He died July 9 in a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness. Born October 11, 1834 in Morehead Iowa, he married Julia Norby March 24, 1910 at Soldier. She died in 1962. A retired farmer and rural mail carrier, he was a longtime Soldier Lutheran Church member. Survivors include son Gene of Lawton, daughters Leone Watson of Smithland and Merle Lucken of Akron, a sister Josephine Anderson of Onawa, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Evangel College Springfield announces two area students Ritchie Plummer of Sioux City and Steven Hemmelman of Merrill earned athletic letters with Hemmelman a wrestling sophomore. Iowa State University lists 1 401 students on the spring Deans List. Akron residents Douglas L. Black Richard A. Less and Stuart R. Nylund plus Paulette Haage earned Dean's Honor Roll recognition for 1971 72. Arla Tapper and Marjorie Dykstra, Westmar College seniors, were named to the Dean's Honor Roll for the second semester 1971 72.
The Small Business Administration says the Sioux City SCORE unit will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday July 26 1972 at the Elks Lodge Building 722 Douglas Sioux City starting at 10 00 a m. Chapter Chairman Warren Lewis invites interested Siouxland businessmen to attend. SBA counselors will be available for interviews to explain programs and provide management counseling.
Damn Yankees tryouts are scheduled for Sunday July 23 at the Opera House with two sessions 2 5 PM and 7 9 30 PM. Richard and Beverly Jacobs direct Drama. Beverly Tucker handles music and piano. Joe Hardy is cast alongside Lola and Applegate roles. many parts for men and women.
The Swinging Tops Club celebrated its fifth anniversary on June 20 at the Castle Inn. A skit by Bette Woskoff entertained, with Joy Dirks, Lorena Gabel, and Jo Moffatt among participants. Seven graduates received corsages and kops charm bracelets. Joy Dirks named most helpful, Lorena Gabel lost the most weight.
Town promotes Thursday through Saturday Gay 90s Days in Akron with events like demolition derby airplane rides chuck wagon a variety show tractor pull and a baby contest fundraiser to support playground equipment. Residents urged to vote and contribute pennies to jars to please all the parents.

Activities included Intermediate and Jr 4-H Camps reports, fair food stand July 10:30 1:30, and plans for July 26 Immanuel Lutheran Church local achievement meeting. Float in Gay 90s parade. citizenship display July 18. membership policy on race and origin. Club treasurer temporarily replaced and Mrs Bride honored for leadership.

The South Dakota Fertilizer Association extends the first annual Corn Growers Yield Contest deadline to July 39 and offers separate irrigated and non irrigated fields with a $3 entry fee per field. A state Soybean Yield Contest sponsored by the SD Fertilizer and Ag Chemical Association invites growers with at least 15 acres to enter, also with a $3 fee.
