Death summons Akron man after brief illness

George Albert Willer 69, lifelong Akron area farmer, died Wednesday July 8 en route to Akron Hospital after a heart attack while helping at his brother Julius’s farm. Born March 18, 1905 near Akron to Hans and Cecelia Willer, he lived in Westfield township since 1930. An Immanuel Lutheran Church official and committee member, he helped build Immanuel Hall (1958-59) and was active in school and rural life groups. Survived by daughters Marilyn Thomsen of Omaha Nebraska and Karen Willer, sons Curtis and another at home, four brothers Ed Julius Ted all of Akron, three sisters Lena Papritz Anna Hasenwand Louise Martin, plus many other relatives. Burial at Riverside cemetery with casket bearers Das Klemme, Allan Hansen, and others.

From Portland, Oregon dateline, the Rev. Dr. R. Marvin Stuart son of a former Iowa pastor and Akron area clergyman has been elected bishop of the Methodist Church. He will oversee the Denver Area including Colorado Wyoming Utah and Montana. Stuart earned degrees from Taylor University and Boston University School of Theology and has served churches in Indiana California and Palo Alto.

Union County Farmers Union Meets in Beresford

Union County Farmers Union gathered at Herman Jacobs home in Beresford on Friday July 19 with a large crowd. President Lewis Peterson led the meeting as Mrs. Mike O Connor served as secretary and Pauline Peterson spoke on the State Camp at Watertown. Linda Larson reported on District 1 Camp at Swan Lake and Mrs. Harry Day on the May District 1 meeting in Alcester. Mike O Connor was elected delegate and Albin Carlson alternate for the August 22 District 1 meeting in Menno. A booth for Achievement Days was approved with Harry Day in charge of arrangements and a donation voted for the New Farmers Union Bus Fund. Ice cream and cookies followed adjournment. The next County meeting will be hosted by Brule Local in September.

Former Akron resident Jesse J. Mann dies in South Dakota

Jesse J. Mann age 76, a retired Tripp County rancher, died suddenly in Hot Springs South Dakota while visiting his son Vernon Mann. Born January 28 1888 in Plymouth County Iowa he farmed mail clerk and mail carrier duties in Akron Iowa before homesteading in South Dakota. He and Ole Waterbury married June 14 1911 and later moved to Grand Island Nebraska. survived by wife Arlo and Vernon Mann of Hot Springs SD and two sons. Burial planned at Woodlawn Memorial Park after services in Grand Island.

Linn Grove High eliminates Akron in semi final

Linn Grove High defeated Akron High 10 to 0 in a semi final at Paullina after Akron failed to score while Linn Grove pitchers held the Akron batters to limited hits. Akron earlier beat Sioux Rapids 10 to 0 to reach the semis, with Klauer pitching six innings on last week’s game and Lockwood struggling on the mound. Akron now heads to Rock Valley for a regular schedule game Friday, with a double header vs West Sioux at home next Monday.
