Dirks Family Picnic in Sioux Falls Park Returns

The Dirks family reunion at McKennon Park Sioux Falls S D drew 67 attendees on a pleasant day with a bountiful chicken dinner. Highlights included Margaret Hart Shann as oldest at 75 and Lorin Wohley as youngest at 3 months, spanning four generations with Harrisburg and Akron connections. Also present were relatives from Verdi Pipestone Tyler Minnesota and even Don Sechmeyer visiting from California. Arrangements were led by Mr and Mrs Thomas Risty and the Hartmann family of Akron was named for the 1957 year.

Grasshopper Threat Seen From Iowa Spring Surveys

Iowa State entomologist Harold Gunderson reports spring grasshopper counts warn of potential outbreaks. Fence rows and road sides show about 40 hoppers per square foot. clover and alfalfa around 20 per square foot. Weather will largely determine actual damage this season. Intensified corn borer activity also noted in Iowa fields.

State entomologist details corn earworm spread and moths

State college entomologist Gunderson reported Wednesday that pupation of the earworm moths has reached 100 percent across the state. Each female moth lays about 600 eggs in two weeks. eggs hatch in one to two days. Farmers should monitor fields now as treatments will begin the first of next week. Northern Iowa farmers may see intensified leaf feeding around early duty.
