A vacant lot near Akron Savings Bank houses a steel cage described as the jail for men who fail to grow facial hair during Akron's August Gay 90s Days celebration. After a kangaroo court verdict, offenders must face imprisonment unless they obtain a no-grow permit from the Akron Commercial Club, available for a price.

The Friendship and Service Club teams with Rural Home Culture Club and local groups including FFA to sponsor a summer baby contest in Akron. Open to children under three within 12 miles, with a $50 Savings Bond prize for first place. Entries due July 15, photos at Boyd Veterinary Clinic or by mail to Mrs. Boyd or Mrs. Hinrichsen. Voting 1¢ per vote, with unlimited votes. Winners announced August at Ye Olde Opera House.

Akron High golfers tied Maurice-Orange City 5 to 5 at Rock Valley in a weekly conference match. Sioux Center beat Central Lyon 5 to 44, Rock Valley defeated George 10 to 0. Medalist was Matt Trotzig with 41. runners up were Joe Trotzig Lyle Haevener and Jay Heisinga with 43. Next Siouxland meet set for Rock Rapids on Monday July 12 with Akron facing George.

Westfield Sharp in Big Fourth Secures Win Over Akron

In Pee Wee baseball on June 22 Westfield scored eight runs in the fourth to beat Akron 9 to 4 with Kirk Miller and Steve Kilstrom pitching and Ronnie Wych catching. On June 24 Akron triumphed 13 to 6 over Sunnyside as Kilstrom and Wych teamed in the battery with Wych homering.
