An Appreciation for Kindness During Hospital Stay

Book and Thimble Club Holds January Meeting in Akron

The Book and Thimble Club met January 29 at Mrs Guinns home with fifteen members. Mrs H B Nelson presided. The Art contest will be April 8 in Akron Public School. Reading Project due by March 1. A nominating committee was appointed. Towels hemmed by the blind of Iowa were distributed. A one act play Moon wall Mugford by high school drama students, directed by Mr R Bargman, pleased members. The cast included Phyllis Chamberlain Mervetta Oetsen Norma Onnen and Stan Willer. The play will be entered in the sub district contest February 16 at Moville Iowa.

Stilbestrol Granted to Weanling Beef Calves Feed Use

Recent permission by the Pure Food and Drug Administration allows stilbestrol to be added to supplements for calves under 600 pounds. Cattlemen with weanling calves may now use the growth-promoting drug in feed. Previously, authorization targeted cattle weighing 600 pounds or more, due to earlier research limitations.

Research on Stilbestrol Feed Adds Profit to Cattle

Exhaustive tests by colleges and commercial stations since early studies show stilbestrol fed cattle, whether large or small feeder calves, can finish at higher value if the supplement and feeding program are well balanced. Experiments at Ralston Purina Research Farm near Gray Summit, Missouri report calves starting at 600 pounds or more yield returns of about $5 to $10 per head over costs.

Stilbestrol Fed Cattle Show Higher Feeding Profits

Test results indicate steers weighing 400 to 600 pounds at start gained more with stilbestrol feeding. Stilbestrol-fed cattle returned feeders about 14.19 dollars per head more than comparable non stilbestrol fed animals in the same tests, suggesting an advantage from start to finish of the feeding period.
