FDIC CONCERNED OVER MOISTURE SHORTAGE IN IOWA

The Federal Crop Insurance Corporation warns of subsoil moisture scarcity in Iowa as 1965 coverage may shrink. Iowa drought and low December moisture leave 80 percent of the state in a drier area than since 1955, prompting possible early closings of coverage and closer monitoring of losses. All-Risk Crop Insurance is offered in seven counties for 1965, with Adams and Allamakee counties newly included.

Northwest Iowa telewriter project to train 400 teachers

A unique eight week in service training for elementary mathematics teachers in four northwest Iowa counties begins February 8 1965. About 400 teachers from Lyon OBrien Osceola and Sioux counties will use electrowriter equipment at centers in Orange City Rock Valley Hawarden Primghar Sheldon Sibley and Row Rapids to receive remote instruction from university and college instructors. The program funded by local districts Ford Foundation and the Iowa Department of Public Instruction aims to improve math teaching and may expand if successful.

AHL boys teams lost both first and second games to Liberty Consolidated while the only and boys teams fell to Orange City. Separately, Mr and Mrs Lowell Taylor adopted a baby girl from Florence Crittenden Home Sioux City. Weather saw ice on walks and a five inch snowfall after a cold wave and mist heavy rain. Obituary and town notes from a Duluth era page

Sixty year old John Hammond died at his sister’s Duluth home. he was Mrs M A Biddlecome’s brother. Tra Tresler, son of Mr and Mrs A J Tresler, broke an arm after falling from an ice hauler wagon. Temperatures plunged to 27 to 32 below zero. Father Healy of the Paulists lectured on Divorce at the opera house to a large audience. A northbound emigrant wagon with heifers passed through town, one leading behind as a man urged the team and his wife walked ahead. Union revival meetings continued in area churches. Home talent rehearsals for a three part Grand Comedy and Farce Comedy, directed by Mrs Iva Kennedy, were set for Feb 2 and 8.

Town Council Proceedings January 1965 Meeting Minutes

The town council met January 19 1965 with Mayor Pro-Tem Clarence Hummel presiding. Present were Woscoff Trotzig Barwick with Philips and Mayor Adams absent. Bills were approved including fuel gas tires and office supplies and various public works and utility line items.
