50 Years Ago Ice Tragedy On Big Sioux River

Fifty years ago Orval Port a one year old, son of Mr and Mrs Bent Port fell through the Big Sioux River ice near the bridge and nearly died. The Akron Opera House presented The White Squaw with a money back guarantee if dissatisfied at the box office. A newborn daughter to Avery Small occurred January six 1918. A son to John and Mas Amundson January fifth 1918. A daughter to Harold Hubtberg January eighth 1918. Winifred Fry married to Frank Heim both from Mer sis, and they started homemaking on a farm near Hinton. Winter returned with temperatures plunging to 65 below zero. The next day features lingering winter.

State Fertilizer Meet Jan 17 18 in Sioux Falls

The South Dakota Fertilizer Association annual meeting and the 18th Fertilizer and Soil Management Shortcourse are set for January 17-18 at the Sioux Falls Coliseum Annex. County Agent Robert Osborne notes the two-day program includes talks and discussions to help farmers plan 1968 fertilization programs. The event opens Wednesday with a program attended by fertilizer industry personnel and a trade show featuring fertilizer and chemical applicator machinery.
