Westfield News Highlights and Club Activities

Notable Iowa figures and local obituaries linger in memorial notices

The item lists several early 20th century Iowa deaths including infants and prominent local figures. Hon Isaac H Struble died aged 70 in LeMars on Feb 17 1918. Timothy Sullivan 69, former livestock dealer and Akron mayor, died Feb 14 1913 in a Sioux City hospital. Sullivan moved to Sioux City in 1905 and led the Iowa Commission Co. He survived by wife Elinor and daughter Kate Muth. Funeral in Sioux City and burial at Castle Grove near Cascade. A four handed clay bird shoot entertained local marksmen with Ed Neary and Veness Smith tying for high score. Burial near Cascade and ties indicate a community obituary page.

Administratrix Appointed for Albert Grant Estate

On February 18 1963 the District Court of Plymouth County appointed Fayetta Brundeen administrator of the Albert Grant estate. All debts should be paid to the administrator and all claims must be presented to the court for allowance by March 7 1963. Attorneys McDonald Sayre McDonald Cherokee Iowa listed.

TV Weed Control Seminar for Corn Farmers Broadcasts

A thirty minute TV Farm Seminar on weed control for corn farmers airs on KVTV Channel 9 Saturday February 23 at 1130 AM and on KTIV Channel 4 Sunday February 24 at 3 PM. Panel includes Dr Stanford Fertig Cornell University and Bert Olson Benton County Minnesota along with three local corn growers. The program covers chemical herbicides, timing, and minimum tillage to boost yields and reduce weed competition.

Amateur Fadio Students At Open House Action

South Dakota State College Engineers Open House featured an amateur radio demonstration run by Curt Chester of Sioux Falls a junior electrical engineering major. His assistant Douglas Gossard of Akron Iowa contacted nearly three dozen privately owned stations as part of the FCCs large network of more than 125000 licensed stations. Cities ranged from Brommerton Washington to Pensacola Florida and includes Thule Air Base Greenland. Life magazine noted a survey of 25 builders showing 60 percent of sales attributed to newspaper ads.

Iowa 1963 Fishing Regulations Announced

The State Conservation Commission set seasons and limits for the 1963 64 fishing year. Changes include lower paddlefish limits, a continuous open season on largemouth bass, a statewide smallmouth bass season May 25 to February 15, and removal of the northern pike minimum length on some waters.
