Ford-Future Scientists Awards names regional director Region Nine

Ford announces regional directors for the Ford Future Scientists of America Awards program. Region Nine includes Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and Wisconsin with Robert E. Yager of the University of Iowa serving as director. Ford and the National Science Teachers Association will fund over 30,000 students and award more than 10,000 scholarships and savings bonds next spring for grades seven through twelve.

A heavy snowstorm and zero weather followed Groundhog Day. Obits: John C C Vanderham, 85, died January 28 near town. wife and daughter preceded him. Thomas J Pike, 79, died in San Diego January 26. Ebba Willis, Feb 1, 1924. A child to Howard Searls on Feb 3, 1924. Earl V Kerr became local Standard Oil agent, succeeding H L Johnson. Auction Sells Old Big Sioux Lumber Before Bridge Replacement

Sixty years ago, lumber from the old Big Sioux bridge southwest of town sold at auction for 248 dollars as a fine new bridge neared completion. The Jacob Haas family southwest of town narrowly escaped suffocation from hard coal gas escaping from a concealed source.

New Easter Seals design unveiled for 1964 drive

The Le Mars Chapter of the Iowa Society for Crippled Children and Adults unveiled a new Easter Seals design to be used in the 1964 campaign. Sheets will be distributed to Plymouth County homes during March to raise funds for medical care and rehabilitation services for crippled children and adults. The design features a green and orange Easter Lily with year 1964 and a right-side perforated identification strip.

Warning to Electric Hair Dryer Users

A health department alert warns Iowa girls and women not to use electric hair dryers in baths showers or while doing laundry. Water and wet conditions greatly increase shock risk. Do not touch dryer's appliance token in water, stand barefoot, or drag cords through puddles. Only safe use is away from tubs and basins with dry feet and dry floors.
