Officials say no shadow means an early spring, though residents rue the lingering cold. A family Hawaiian trip inspires talk of sunny getaways as Akron businesses change signs, from Paul IGA to Wallys, and plans for the Akron Golf association Sweetheart Ball on Feb 15 unfold.
Mrs Henry Collmann hosts last Friday visitors including Mrs Doering and Mrs Kruse while Jim Moller shares supper. Raymond Gabel and Colin Collmann visit Tuesday. G Moller spends Sunday with Ken Johnsons in Omaha. Numerous relatives attend family dinner for 20 at the Henry Collmann home. Other visits include Otto Meins and Donald Boetger, and Donald Hendricks’ stay with his parents.
A baked smoked or broiled ham is served with a sparkling cherry sauce. Drain tart red cherries and reserve juice to 1 cup. Combine sugar and cornstarch, add liquid to blend, cook slowly until thick and clear. Stir in cherries and red food coloring. serve hot with ham.
Westfield notices include visits by Mr. and Mrs. George Bern to Sioux Falls with Mr. Wetrosky moving to St. Cloud Veterans hospital, and social visits with relatives. Debrah Burdette's bridal shower at Westfield Congregational Church is noted along with open house plans for Miles and Rhonda Brown. Newcomers Bernie Gruss welcomed. Miles and Rhonda married in Darwin Minnesota, farming with Grace Spaulding and Robert Michaels north of Westfield.
February events list including Lawton Bronson and Boyden Hull games, Willow and Westfield, a school board budget hearing, Hudson game, and a girls district tournament at Le Mars. Also noted is a Lions Club chicken or chili supper to support boys state tournament expenses with advance and door ticket prices. Proceeds aid travel costs. gym will host activities.
The group will host a Sweetheart Dance on Friday February 14 at the Sioux City auditorium. Eddie Skeets orchestra provides music from 9 p.m. to 12 45 a.m. Tickets cost 2 dollars. Attendees are asked to bring a sack lunch and coffee will be served at 12 30 a.m.
A meat thermometer guides cooking pork to the proper doneness. Fresh pork roasts should roast at 170 degrees F internal, fully cooked hams to 140 degrees F, cook-before-eating hams to 160 degrees F, and smoked shoulder rolls to 179 degrees F.
Akron Assembly No. 172 Rainbow Girls held its 24th officer installation at the Masonic Temple on Sunday January 19 Roxanne Benda was installed as Worthy Advisor. The ceremony featured a Rainbow color arch and a Friendship aisle led by Robin Benda and other members. A Daisy yellow theme, spaghetti supper fundraiser, Rainbow candy sales, and a planned March slumber party were announced along with upcoming church services and a February 5 meeting to install choir director Mary Snow and Outer Observer Nancy Wales. Members listed include Wendy Appley Teresa Hansen Lori Hansen Brenda Osterbuhr Darla Stotz Deb bie Meyer Robin Benda Becky Burdette and many others with future initiations planned for February 19.
Mr. and Mrs. Tony Draakmo of Alcester announce the engagement of their daughter Janet Marie to James Huls son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Huls of Akron. Janet works at Otis Radio Hawarden and James works for Load King Trailer Co Elk Point. An April wedding is planned.
Marc A. Lewison of Akron was named to the scholastic honor list for the first semester at the University of South Dakota School of Business. He studies accounting and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Lewison Jr. of Akron. Also on the list from Beresford were Dale R. Merriman accounting Joseph J. Morris accounting and David A. Stone management.
The University of South Dakota dean announces the fall honor lists for arts and sciences. Marten Trotzig is among 54 seniors with perfect 4.0 records, while 294 students overall are honored, including 159 with perfect grades. | 102 freshmen join the dean’s list, with 26 earning straight A’s and others above 3.571.
Jean Vruegdenhil of Akron is among 39 percent of Augustana College fulltime students earning high academic distinction in the first semester. Dean's list shows 722 students with at least a 3.1 average. 146 achieved perfect A grades. Eligibility requires at least three full courses and a 3.1 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Mrs. Almina Holm of Akron celebrated her 93rd birthday on Friday January 31 with family including daughters and husbands Herb Anderson of Trent South Dakota Lowell Bellwood and a son Frank both of Akron. Also attending were Roy Noble Floyd Miller Sandy of Elk Point and Irma Wilkens Verna of Akron. She thanks everyone for cards gifts and calls that made the day memorable.
A daughter, Jennifer Marie, was born January 31 1975 to Mr and Mrs Gary Boyum of Orange California. Mrs Boyum is former Linda Anderson of Dell Rapids South Dakota. Jennifer was born on the great great grandmother Almina Holm's 93rd birthday. Grandparents Phil Anderson Dell Rapids and Ollie Boyum Phoenix. Great grandparents Herb Anderson Trent Carrie Brown Dell Rapids and Almina Holm Akron. Mrs Helms has four children seven grandchildren 13 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.
The annual stockholders meeting of the Farmers Co operative of Akron will be held at the new Akron Community school on Saturday afternoon March 1 beginning at 1 p.m. Three directors will be elected one from Area I and two from Area II. A luncheon will be served at 12 noon. Door prizes will be given away after the meeting. Members are invited to attend. Plan to visit with friends.
Community notes report visits and gatherings among Utesch Lamoureux Utesch and Rozell families in Yankton Akron and Montesano. A Loyal Neighbors club meets Feb 11 at Esther Swanson’s home. A benefit soup supper on Feb 16 at Nathanael Lutheran Alce ster supports Mrs Roy Tweet.
A string of visits to residents at the nursing home included Nelsons Westfield Ada Eyhest Anderson and others. Guests from Le Mars Akron Sioux City Corydon Remsen Friendship and Service Club members supported with cookies decorations and a Valentine theme. The film Art of Age was shown highlighting elderly leisure activities.
