Committee Cuts Bond Proposal For Akron School District

A twelve member School Building Citizens committee met with the School Board on December 22 to discuss a revised elementary school plan. The bond would total 264,700 dollars, down from 310,000, with 8 classrooms plus Kindergarten and special ed, 2 multi purpose rooms, and a kitchen. Public display of floor plans is planned with a meeting set for January 5 at Akron School Auditorium to explain details and answer questions.

Cheerful Neighbors Club Meets for Christmas Song Project

The Cheerful Neighbors Club met December 5 at Mrs Allyn Holtzs home with ten members. They sang Christmas songs after a music project and discussed plans for the Christmas party. The next meeting on January 2 at Mrs Leverne Klemme will finalize arrangements and include a recipe exchange. Mrs Darrel Kaskey is reporter.

Richland Man Called By Death in South Dakota

Maurice Erickson 83 lifelong Richland resident died Saturday at a Yankton hospital after a long illness. He was born April 27 1878 near Elk Point and married Blanche Tucker March 13 1921. Survivors include his widow a son a stepson two stepdaughters two brothers eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services set for Thursday 2:00 pm at Anderson Funeral Home Elk Point with burial in Richland Cemetery.

Akron High Cage Teams Split With Rock Valley High

Akron High School basketball split a Siouxland Conference twinbill with Rock Valley High at Rock Valley. The B team lost 46 to 27 while the varsity won 76 to 66 behind Jim Gabel 26 points and Mike Klauer 21. Next Akron hosts Central Lyon in Rock Rapids January 12.

Registration at USD shows good increase

Enrollment at the University of South Dakota rose to 2 520 students last September, the largest year rise among South Dakota colleges since WWII. Students came from 236 South Dakota communities, 34 states, and 10 foreign countries, with Vermillion's total up 265 from 1960. School Busses Involved In Recent Mishaps

A string of bus incidents last week included a fatal crash near Hinton where Alfred Albers died after his empty bus stalled near a railroad crossing. William Porter’s Westfield Community bus carried thirty children and tipped on an icy bend, with no injuries. A foggy Highway 76 collision north of Sioux Center injuring a 17 year old from Ireton and a nose injury to another pupil, while 40 others escaped harm.

Death summons Chatsworth man in Hawarden parish

William Burnight of Chatsworth aged 75 years 7 months 18 days died Monday December 18 at Hawarden hospital after a stroke. Born April 20, 1886, he was a lifelong resident, carpenter, and member of St. Mary's parish Hawarden. Survived by brothers Charles Sioux City Henry Chatsworth sister Lizzie Gibbons Westfield and nephew Ted Burnight Hawarden.
