Jerry Smith Night honors Akron high school scorekeeper

Shorty Jerry Smith was celebrated for 44 years as Akron high school scorekeeper. Paul Krohn presented a plaque as Smith’s athletic coverage and belief in local sports were praised. The community applauds his dedication, writing for the Akron Register-Tribune and missing few games.

Christmas party and visits at nursing home

Lizzie Tindall attended Gold Star Mothers Christmas party at the Legion Hall with Mrs. Roy Postlewait and Elsa Strobel from Westfield visiting Minnie Postlewait. Rev. Larry Vallery and church members visited, had dinner, and delivered a season’s message. Theodore circle of Union Creek church hosted with sandwiches coffee bingo and fresh fruit prizes. The Sarah circle of Immanuel Lutheran served ice cream cookies and coffee while presenting the film A Time For Singing Birth of Jesus. Red slippers and bibs given to the home. Visitors included Mrs Forest Williams Ida Johnson Spink SD Bertina Williams. Albert Osterbuhr visited his sister and family on the Brunsville farm. Virgil Ross Westfield visited his mother Gertrude Ross. Gene Dewey and son from Westfield called on Elsie Anderson. Ed Nelson and Lois Nelson from Westfield attended the Trinity Lutheran program. Jerold Dykstra hosted hospital and home employees for a Christmas dinner at Trinity Lutheran. Lyle Wegner and son of Sioux Falls visited Agnes Toben. Community Christmas program heard over the intercom. visitors from West Wing Nursing Home attended. The home reports few visitors recently due to cold weather.

Mrs Donald Rev Wedding at Trinity Lutheran Akron

Marilyn Ruth Andresen daughter of Ray and Mrs Andresen of Akron and Donald Renken son of Herman and Mrs Renken of Akron exchanged wedding vows at 2 pm November 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church Akron with Rev Durwood Clauson officiating. The service featured orange and green altar candles, a ivory satin gown, apricot fuju mums bouquet, and a double ring ceremony.

Scouts Christmas tree sale on Main Street Akron

Akron Gun club will hold a Sunday shoot on December 15 at 1 30 PM with officer elections. Cub Scouts parents meet Wednesday at 7 PM for merit badges and awards. Freedom Lodge No 434 AF and AM plans its December 17 meeting with officer elections. The Book and Thimble Club met December 4 with 20 members. talk on nuisance calls. Christmas luncheon planned for December 18 at Inez Little’s home. Sioux Viking Lodge 494 Christmas party December 15 at 6 30 PM at Odd Fellows Hall featuring carols, Santa, and laid out by several host families. Liberty Johnson Homemakers Farm Bureau Club assembled December 4 to pack a Christmas box. Hawaii study next year. January 8 meeting planned.

Pat Stanley Receives Iowa Lakes Scholarship

Pat Stanley of Akron is awarded a scholarship by the Towa Lakes Community College Music Scholarship Association. The group formed last year to aid talented local graduates attending Iowa Lakes Community College in music, now seeks donations for the 1973-74 fund. Urchie Green will lead an April 1 campus clinic and concert to benefit the scholarship fund, with proceeds supporting the fund and donors admitted free.

The Iowa Employment Security Commission reports 594 workers idle statewide during the week of November 26 due to energy shortages. Forest City plant laid off 400 indefinitely. Grinnell firm closed with 35 idled. Keokuk component shortage idled 50. two Waterloo employers cut 80. Algona 29 temporarily terminated. Retail hours trimmed, especially large Des Moines area supermarkets. Weekly report will track labor market impacts.
