Catholic Daughters Christmas party December 14 6 30 potluck supper followed by film Grotto of Redemption and gift exchange. Father Schissel and Andrea Simonetti guests. layette drive for missions. Mrs Betty Snyder discharged from St. Vincent Hospital Sioux City.
On Tuesday December 1 the Westfield girls B team lost 23 to 34 to Whiting with San Morehead and Mary Fiscus each scoring 12. The A team fell 35 to 44 to Whiting with Carolyn Fiscus leading Whiting at 21 and Bonnie Neal for Westfield at 16. On Friday December 4 the girls A team lost 30 to 53 to Cushing with Mary Carlson scoring 12 and Sherley Mammen 31 for Cushing. The Westfield boys A team won 60 to 47 over Cushing while the B team lost 44 to 28 to Meckling. On Monday December 7 the boys B team beat Meckling 44 to 28, and the Westfield boys A team won 71 to 44 over Meckling. High scorers included Stan Knapp and Jamie Weber with 8, and Gordon Knapp with 18 for Westfield. The girls A and B teams are set to play Sargent Buffs Saturday December 12 on home court, with boys and girls at Union on December 15.
Plymouth county Livestock Feeders Association held its annual banquet and meeting on November 18 in LeMars. Re-elected for two years were Ed Willer Akron James Wolf LeMars Ray Grage LeMars Harlan Wagner Merrill Clarence Vos Kingsley and Leland Sargisson Kingsley. Dean Johnson vice president of the National Bank of Omaha was principal speaker, discussing banker views on cattle feeders and assessing a candidate's character direction citizenship management past performance debt and capital. Over 200 attendees heard reports on association achievements and 4-H and Jr Feeder Cattle program completions as quest of honor. The event took place at the KC Hall in Le Mars.
Local wartime notes announce Pvt Claude Wesley Burrill of Akron to a West Point appointment effective July 2, 1946. Reports of Pvt Henry L. Bichacker and Pfc Elmer F. Anderson wounded in Germany. Died Mrs Henry P Willer 58 in Westfield township. Funeral in Akron M E Church. AHL teams lose double header Hawarden 40 27 and 41 22. Akron girls win Westfield 46 29. Akron boys 82 25. Married Phyllis Kallsen and Patrick Callahan November 30 1944 at St Patrick’s Rectory Akron. Pvt Glenn P Horton seriously wounded on French front. nurse Ruth March of Akron reports him improving. Born daughters to Amundson, Liston, McMahon. son to James Houston. Ben Hartman injured by bull. Racket store sold by N M Hansen to A Bellwood. Audition sales advertised by Clark Grant Muth Primm and Bubs. Died Mrs Alonzo Jenkins 52 December 1 1914. Jennie J Wilson from Sioux Falls to care for A A Wilson. married Jenkins April 28 1886. Interment Riverside Cemetery by Vesper Chapter Eastern Star.
Albert Janer of Hinton seeks a recount of ballots in the November election for the Fourth supervisor district where D. Twogood was reelected. Plymouth county officials order slot machines removed in all towns. Census of Agriculture work to begin January 2, 1935. Mrs Albert O Abraham of the town vicinity noted November 29, 1934. Obituary: Mrs Albert Leiff, 65, died November 29 at home northwest of town after a long illness. Surviving are husband Albert, sister Sarah Peterson and brothers Axel, Francis and Emil Peterson of Big Springs S D along with nephews and nieces. Funeral services held at Big Springs Baptist church with burial in the church cemetery.
A chimney fire heavily damaged the Ed Burnight residence at night. Morten Wendt and two companions rescued Teddy Batchelder from thin ice after a river hike. Akron High beat Ponca 7 to 6 in the season finale. Local sports names Booth Anderson Metz Baldwin Meske Ericson Ross Snyder J Klauer. Births include Ation and Rowson on November 26 1924 and Har ry Serbels and Miles Spaulding in late November December 1924. Neva Lois Koch died at one week old December 1 1924. School board urged smallpox vaccination amid a violent epidemic scare. Heavy wet snow fell December 8 24. Corn picking nearing completion. Anna King sold her millinery business to Pearl Wisnow. Twin sons born to Frank Neal on December 8 1914 and Oscar Baldwin on December 4 1914. Herman Bohlen attended a state dealers’ convention in Sioux Falls.
Early December 1904 saw moderate temperatures with little snow. Changes include Frank Young resigning as head millwright at Akron mill, replaced by Norman J. Williams. M. A. Agnes and J. J. Ralfs enter auctioneering. Pastor Geo Ratder of the Christian church moves to a Rosebud reservation claim with family. Edward Hoffman, 63, dies December 8 near Adavills. wife Loretta and eight children survive. A son is born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Johnson on December 5, 1904.
The 89th Congress will bring a liberal tilt with a Democratic Senate and House majority exceeding two to one. Republicans gained 20 House seats and one Senate seat but lost 38 House seats and one Senate seat overall. Despite turnover, leadership remains similar, with Humphrey replaced as Majority Whip by one of three contenders. President Johnson’s sweeping victory could push independence aside as Mills aims to push Medicare, while labor plans include Medicare expansion, Appalachia aid, and Taft Hartley reform. Army announces a policy allowing December 9 to January 1 entrants to take 16 or 17 days home leave to spend Christmas and New Year at home. Enlistment grants immediate pay and allowances, with up to seven additional days after advanced training. details via local recruiters at the Selective Service Board in LeMars or Sioux City.
The study links high school course units to district size across Town public four year high schools. Less than 20 units appear in districts with under 160 pupils. over 50 units in districts with 300+ pupils. 60+ units only in districts with 600+ pupils. Reorganizations boosted units from 11–26 to 29–36. In 1964-65 Town has 459 high school and 687 nonhigh districts, down from 819 and 3,598 in 1954-55. Two Town students, Karl Haglund and Christopher L. Davis, were named to Iowa’s delegation for the U.S. Senate Youth Program in 1965, a week in Washington, D. C. with meetings, briefings, and tours.
Akron library readers received colorful Christmas Seal bookmarks this week promoting 1964 Christmas Seals. The bookmarks highlight books on tuberculosis and respiratory diseases as entertaining and informative. Plymouth County Tuberculosis and Health Association aided several listed books, supporting the 1964 campaign funds used to combat tuberculosis and other respiratory illnesses.

The State Conservation Commission announced that over 220000 trees and shrubs were planted in Iowa this year under the Farmer-Sportsmen Co dp program. FSC projects offer sportsmen groups a chance to aid private land wildlife cover with the state paying half the cost. Multiflora rose red pine and honeysuckle formed most plantings, with Jasper Marshall and Polk counties leading in project numbers. 29 sportsmen groups across 26 counties completed 140 planting efforts.
