Robert L. Morris of the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa reports evidence that surface applied chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides have seeped into shallow groundwater in parts of Iowa. He notes vulnerability under sandy soils and low organic content, and says public health significance remains uncertain. The finding arises from a University study on pesticide levels in wildlife.
Dr Morris reports results from six sampling stations on the Mississippi Iowa Cedar Racoon and Missouri rivers. He notes farmers rely on farm chemicals but cautious use limits contamination.
