Sunmobile solar car showcased in GM Previews of Progress

Akron Community High students will view Sunmobile a 15 inch solar powered model car as part of General Motors Previews of Progress on December 9 at 10 00 am The show uses a 300 watt lamp to simulate the sun and demonstrates sun powered energy as part of a broader science demonstration including a roaring jet engine and gyroscopic guidance on an air bearing platform The program aims to spark interest in science and engineering and has reached nearly 35 million people since 1946 through seven touring teams

Twenty years ago a fatal crash near Akron injured two boys Keith Morehead eight and Bernard Peck ten as their bicycles were pushed uphill by an oncoming car driven by Radmacher. Other items note births marriages deaths and community notices from 1945 including J Henry Willer Sr. and John F. Ownen obituaries plus local weddings and relocations. A cold Thanksgiving contrasted with later mild weather in 1945.

Shortage of corn yield reported in area and local life events

An unusual corn shortage is noted in the area. Raymond Smith Jr. returns from over two years of army service at Schofield Barracks near Honolulu. Marriage licenses issued in Sioux City include Clifford Lamour of Akron and Opal Ferris of near Jefferson SC, and John Popken of Akron with Esther Marriman of Truman MN. Frank Sayles sustains head injuries when his coat tangled in a gas engine flywheel. a doctor treated him. December 1926 brings three inches of snow ending a mild November. Local stores take on holiday looks. Dr G H Wooton published a train trip account from Omaha to Texas and Louisiana with Mr and Mrs C G Brady and Boyson Ross, sponsored by Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Co. George Knecht, November 27, 1925. A daughter born to Floyd and Mrs. Nelson of Westfield on November 30, 1926. Auction ads from Lester Raish, Frank Jacobs and Eilert Ludwigs. Ceiling plaster damages dining room at Chas Kanage home. Died Mrs. William Siemon, 55, a pioneer Akron resident, November 28, 1925. survived by husband, two sons, two daughters, ten grandchildren, five brothers, two sisters. Funeral at St Patrick’s Catholic Church and burial in the church cemetery.

Resignation at Wintersteen's Jeweler Shop

Fifty years ago N C Campbell resigned as jeweler at Wintersteen's store to move to Wausa Nebraska, with John Gommels of Manson Iowa succeeding him. Thanksgiving day was described as rough yet making home fireside pleasant for Mr and Mrs John Pendleton.

Old residents observed a Bath wedding anniversary on November 29 1916 at their home. Bert Rolfe lost a hand in a corn husker accident near Richland and was taken to Ak ron Hospital. Louis Springer went to Beloit Kansas after his father’s death. C P Vargason resigned as nightwatchman with L Bar ington succeeding him. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs P Culhane on November 27 1915. Threshing and corn picking neared completion. F L Kirton sold his grocery and confectionery business to Harry Cohen of Sioux City. E P and J B Klauer learned of their mother’s death in Dubuque Iowa and attended the funeral there. Akron town team beat Hudson 41 to 9 in opera house basketball. A H S girls lost at Hawarden 138 to 9. Editor and Mrs Wesley M Smith of Lennox South Carolina visited relatives for Thanksgiving.

Akron Opera House praised at Woodmen banquet in 1905

Sixty years ago American Insurance Co of Des Moines offered Akron the opera house for sale at contract price. A Modern Woodmen banquet and jubilee at the opera house drew praise. Akron public school enrolled 297 pupils in the month ending November 3, 1905. John Hoyt and T C Squires bought land in Blue Blanket valley SD. Henry Jurgenson cited November 4, 1905. Iowa Drivers Asked to Check Licenses for Expiration Dates

Iowa state highway patrol asks drivers to examine licenses for renewal within a month of their birth date. Regular licenses now cost $5 for a two year period, up from $3. Chauffeur licenses have also increased.
