Thanksgiving visitors and hospital news fill Westfield pages as families gather in the area. Local residents travel to Ames Sioux City and Elk Point for holidays while others move homes and celebrate with relatives. Westfield Tuesday Club conducts a Thanksgiving program at the church and outlines district federation plans and charity drives for Cherokee and state projects.
Iowa motorists face two common snow day hazards as winter arrives. Following plows too closely risks rear-end crashes when drifts stall equipment. Slanted blades on single blades can pull plows into oncoming traffic. drivers should keep distance and pass carefully.
The Iowa State Highway Commission will switch from blue to flashing amber lights this winter following a national standard change. Snow operations remain similar to last year with 3,700 miles salted when needed and stockpiles of sand at 200 locations. The fleet includes 610 sand and salt spreaders, 800 plow trucks, 160 motor graders, and 17 rotary plows ready for rapid deployment.
Seven hundred fifty people filled Le Mars High School Auditorium on November 21 for the Annual 4 H Awards Night. Penny Blum welcomed attendees as Master of Ceremonies as county leaders and extension staff presented seals and certificates.
The Post Office Department lists guidance for Christmas mailings including unsealed greeting cards at 8¢, sealed cards at 4¢, and bundles for local and distant destinations. It covers Canada 4¢ rate, other foreign rates, insured and certified options, special delivery and handling, and deadlines of December 10 for distant states and December 19 for local delivery.
About 25 000 widows aged dependents and disabled children of workers who died before 1940 can now receive monthly social security payments. The 1939 and 1960 amendments open benefits to widows of deaths after 1938 and before 1940, their aged parents, and disabled children. Eligibility requires specific ages and disability onset before 18.
The group met November 14 at Caroline Hasenbank's home to plan a Christmas party at the Township Hall. Committees for food and decorations were chosen, guests may be invited, and favors for Akron Hospital will be made. A telephone tree will be used for the event. Caroline Hasenbank demonstrated Preparation of Breakfast Fruits, Janet Gerrietts spoke on How to Plan a Good Breakfast Meal, and Dianna Willer discussed New Food Groups. Lunch was served by Caroline and her mother.

Ralph Smith, chairman, announced community committeemen elections in Union County this month. Eleven districts elect three members each to run ASC programs locally. Polling sites include Sioux Valley Township Hall December 1, Miller School December 8, Spink Township Hall December 12, Peterson School December 12, and Norman Hagen home December 13. Each committee chair serves as a county convention delegate. The county convention to elect next year’s committees will be held December 30.

In Ames Iowa a couple was married in a double ring ceremony conducted by Rev William K Benbow. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Ray Schlotfeldt, sister and brother in law of the groom of Ames. After a short honeymoon in the Ozarks they will reside in Brunsville at home.
