Waterways Replacing Gullies in Union County District

Farmers in the Union County Guil Conservation District report 15 growers received ACP cost sharing and soil conservation help over 11 months to establish about 23 acres of permanent grassed waterways. These 30 to 40 foot wide channels slow runoff, protect topsoil, support terraces and contouring, offer hay and grazing, and benefit upland game habitat.

Farmers report crossings improved as gullies are filled and shaped with sod forming tame and native grasses. After seeding, protective cover establishes quickly, promising future proliferation of grassed waterways where gullies once defaced fields.

Iowa Breeders Coop to Meet in Lemars November 30

The Iowa Breeders Cooperative will hold its annual meeting at the County Fairgrounds in Lemars starting with a free pancake and sausage lunch at noon on Wednesday November 30. Arlie A. Pierson says the manager will show slides and discuss artificial breeding of cattle and swine, with swine AI ready for use but little history to date. Visitors and members may sign for a door prize. a drawing will determine the dairy heifer sired by AI to be awarded.

Vaccinate dogs early against distemper urges IVMA

The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association warns that most dogs fail to reach one year without distemper without vaccination. Distemper can kill 30 to 80 percent of affected dogs, especially around seven months old, with symptoms including light sensitivity, eye discharge, swollen throat nodes, rough coat, and coughing. Vaccination should start around three months, with serums for underage protection and boosters as needed.
