Mental Health names Beverly Haverly as community social worker

Beverly Haverly was hired part time by Plains Area Mental Health Center to serve as a community social worker replacing Jo Lynn Jackes. A 1968 St Marys Remsen graduate, she earned a 1971 Briar Cliff BA in sociology with psychology minor and an MSW from Tulane in 1972. She has worked in social work and community organization, and will oversee the Big Brother Big Sister program, Merry Mixers, therapy, and parenting class arrangements in Plymouth County this fall.

More than 500 students received degrees diplomas or certificates from Western Iowa Tech community college graduation ceremonies held Friday Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. in the Sioux City municipal auditorium. Gordon Schempp Northwestern Bell addressed the graduates with a commencement message.

Navy fireman apprentice completes six month Mediterranean cruise

Patrick C. Melton a Navy fireman apprentice and his shipmates aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy homeported in Norfolk Virginia completed a six month deployment with the U S sixth fleet. The Kennedy conducted training with allied ships and naval units and logged the 100000th carrier landing by an F 14 Tomcat during extensive flight operations. The carrier visited Dubrovnik Egypt Alexandria Naples Nalaga Barcelona Rota and Mallorca while Melton served aboard the 4950 crew ship, a 1000 foot long floating city with 87800 tons and capacity for 95 aircraft. Melton joined the Navy in August 1976.
