Mr and Mrs Dewey of Downey California visit relatives in Westfield while a flow er show at Wesley Methodist Church draws attendees from the Lilly family and friends. Kay Lilly Mansfield earns a BA in Education at Wayne State College and will teach in Lake City High School this fall. Aug events include Good Will truck in Westfield and a Lilly family picnic honoring Evelyn Brown.

Local crime: two Sioux City men sentenced to five years for depot robbery and other thefts. Obituaries: Catherine Anderson 73 died Aug 2 1943 in Le Mars, John Henry Peters 79 died July 23 1943 in Springfield Mo. Other notes: E Fletcher 73 drowned in Missouri river. Elmer F Anderson purple heart recipient Northwestern Africa.
Forty years ago the Union County South Dakota Old Settlers Association scheduled its annual picnic for August 28 1923 at Riversioux Park. Plymouth county highways would carry travelers with material hauled to the road center and the Custer Battlefield Highway was a favored route for motor tourists. A bicycle collision near a Brunsville dance ended with minor injuries to Bobby Greenlent and a sheriff and deputy quieted a disturbance. Mrs Thomas W Lias, 69, Plymouth County pioneer, died July 23 1922 after moving from New York to Iowa in 1857 and homesteading near Adaville before retiring to Akron where she is interred Riverside cemetery.
Fifty years ago the site south of Akron Savings Bank corner was cleared for the new exchange building. Dry hot weather threatened corn yields. Mrs A P Conger and Miss Bila Farnham planned to run a Sioux City rooming house near Morningside College. Walter Mellen operated a Milwaukee depot block as circus trains passed through. W C Anderson advanced framework on the Scandinavian Lutheran church. Births reported: a daughter to Geo Brouillette on August 1 1913, a son to Earnest Henke August 5 1918, a son to John J Trautt August 6 1913. Akron lost two baseball games to Le Mars and Sioux City Keen batters. Fire destroyed the Reese Harris farm residence due to a defective chimney flue, tenants Ernest and Mrs Anderson losing most belongings. Westfield hosted a two day carnival with parades and events. J F Kennedy attended his Civil War regiment reunion in Illinois.
Union County Farm Bureau board members held their regular monthly gathering Monday evening July 29 at the Russell Hanson home. A committee was formed to staff a booth at Alcester August 12 during Achievement Days. Plans were set for the annual Farm Bureau Meeting at a later date, with John Walker from Parker, South Dakota, District Director, present. Meeting adjourned and lunch was served by Mrs Russell Hanson.
