Nursing home social highlights and visits in Mesquite area

The Home program featured singing by Mr and Mrs Fay Small and family from Mesquite Texas with Fay reading from the Bible. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Claus Frerichs of Le Mara. Hope Circle of Trinity Lutheran hosted 21 members with a light luncheon. Numerous locals and extended family stopped by over the week for visits and casual gatherings, and a Knapp reunion at Cyrus Knapp farm attracted guests from across the United States. Wendy Johnson staged popcorn during the Laurence Welk show, and Alice Bryant attended Adaville church and dined with Eldon Bryant.

Garvin Sparks wed at Wesley United Methodist Church

The June 2 ceremony at Wesley United Methodist Church joined Michelle Garvin of Akron and Steven Sparks of Sioux City in a double ring candlelight wedding. Rev. Sparks and Rev. Burdette officiated. The bride wore an English Nottingham lace gown with a veil to the waist and carried a white rose bouquet. Attendants included Suzanne Garvin as maid of honor and bridesmaids Jacqueline Johnson and Linda Sparks. A reception followed at the Country Club, and the couple will live in Sioux City for the summer before relocating to Norwalk, Iowa, where Sparks will teach English. Obituary: Gerhardt Von Hagel 81 of Akron

Gerhardt Von Hagel 81 Akron died July 24 1973 after a brief illness. Funeral July 26 at Trinity Lutheran church with Rev. Durwood Clauson officiating. Burial in Riverside cemetery. Survivors include sisters Anna Long Marie Hitzemann and brothers John George all of Akron. He was born July 29 1891 in Union County Iowa and moved to Akron in 1898 becoming Akron’s first electric welder in 1934.

Plymouth County fair to host pie baking contest and recipe drive

The Plymouth County Fair invites all county cooks to a pie baking contest sponsored by the Farm Bureau women. Entries due August 1 with judging August 8 at 9 30 a m in Becker hall Le Mars. Prizes of 2 50 and 1 50 awarded in fruit cream and chiffon. Cream and chiffon pies require refrigeration and insulated containers.
