Discovery of a large natural spring on Harvey Lias farm hillside south of Akron draws visitors and Sioux City channel 4 to cover the site. Harvey laid a 4,000 foot pipeline to a deep well for irrigation, while plans for Akron Gay 90s bicentennial proceed with dates and venues being finalized.
The Akron Register-Tribune lists staff roles with "Shorty" Hazel as owner and manager Vergene Hazel as manager and Fran Miller as editor. It notes publication weekly on Thursdays in Akron Iowa Plymouth County. Billing: $7.00 per year. six months $4.00 in adjacent counties. $8.00 per year elsewhere.

Akron TOPS 893 met on Wednesday April 21 with 11 members present. The group conducted song and pledge, read and approved secretary and treasurer reports, and announced a 5 percent loss for their adult best loser. A macrame hanger drawing is set for the first Wednesday in May. Mrs. Weinblom led a discussion lecture, bringing new ideas and tips. the meeting concluded early, and members found the evening enjoyable and enlightening. TOPS Tip Of The Week warned that poor dieting could be life threatening.
The Liberty-Johnson Farm Bureau Homemakers met at Mrs M E Atkinson's home on Monday April 12. Thirteen members and three visitors attended as they worked on two bi centennial scrap books for Plymouth county home and the Living Farm home.
Siouxland arts council stages Rick Besoyan musical comedy Little Mary Sunshine at Sioux City municipal auditorium on April 29 30 and May 1 at 8 p m. The show set in Colorado features rangers Indians and a quirky plot. Tickets at the box office 10 30 a m to 4 30 p m weekdays and 10 30 to 2 30 p m Saturdays admission 4 for adults 3 for students dinner plus theater ticket offered for 10.
Mr and Mrs Roger Easton of rural Westfield hosted Joseph Massaquoi from Sierra Leone as part of 73 Farm Bureau families in Iowa who welcomed 90 international students from 12 colleges during the Iowa Farm Bureau women's International student weekend April 23 25. The weekend aims to acquaint students with American agriculture and rural life while hosts learn about the students countries. Seventeen students brought their families, and the group included students from 36 countries.
Akron club women attend the Iowa Federation of Womens clubs convention in Des Moines April 20 21. Mrs Robert Embree and Mrs C J Parkinson of Le Mars received awards for creative writing. Valda Embree won top overall for The Secret and Virginia Parkinson won first in Heritage for Bolt I have not heard a man complain. Writings included in the bicentennial collection. Many Plymouth county members attended and officers were elected.
Patricia Brown and Duane Finch united in marriage in an evening ceremony on Wednesday April 14 1976 at Westfield Congregational Church with a reception in the church parlors. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Wallace Brown of Westfield. The groom’s parents are Bill Finch of Hawarden and Lois Van Wyhe of Ireton. Honor attendants included Sue Radtke and Dwight Finch.
A long list of visitors from Akron Merrill Le Mars Westfield Chatsworth and surrounding towns gathered at the Home to honor Minnie Postlewait as she turns 98 on April 26 1976. Family friends and neighbors shared piano tunes and good wishes while Rev James Sandvik led a service and Country Cousins entertained.
Mrs. Charles Jurgensen was honored on Easter weekend with a birthday gathering including Edna Jurgensen Hannah Osterthun and many Jurgensen relatives. Mrs. John Kerr of Akron hosted a baby shower on April 23 with gifts and lunch. Additional showers and club meetings decorate the week with Rainbow officer elections May 5 and installation May 9.
Technical Sergeant Ronald A. Klave of Akron has earned his third U S Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service. As chief of the medical aid station at Taipei and now supervisor of the general therapy clinic at Shu Lin Kou Taiwan he attended Akron Community Schools.
Mr and Mrs Terry Miller of Akron announce the birth of a son Friday April 23 at Akron hospital. Michael Dale weighed 8 pounds 11 ounces. He has a sister Amy aged two. Grandparents are Marvin Ver Hoven and Bill Miller of Akron. Great grandparents include Ilva Kemper Hawar den Jake Ver Hoeven Delores Erickson and Clarence Miller. Nellie Taylor of Sioux Center nursing home is the great great grandmother.
Navy captain Frank E. Lucken, 43, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Henry Lucken of Le Mars, has been promoted while serving with Fleet Combat Direction Systems Support Activity in San Diego. He is an Akron High School graduate and a 1953 Iowa State College alumnus who joined the Navy in August 1953.
The FHA chapter will sponsor a bicentennial style show on Tuesday evening May 4 at 8 p.m. in Akron High School auditorium. Lunch will be served. Call Miss Snook at 568 2404 if you have historic costumes to model.
University of South Dakota sets first 4 week and 8 week session registration on campus June 7. Second 4 week session registration is July 6. Second session and 8 week classes end July 30, with summer commencement July 31 at 10 a.m. Tuition and fees due at registration. Packets to be picked up at Slagle Auditorium and registration completed at the new armory.
