Cecil J. Kennedy, chairman of the ASCS County Committee, announces 1964 shorn wool payments at 16.5 per cent of grower returns, based on a national wool price aim of 62 cents per pound. Mohair payments are zero as price exceeds the support, with 1963 payments recorded at 9,570.16 dollars in Plymouth County.

Pigs for 4-H Market Show Warned to Grow Fast
County Extension Assistant Duane R. Buehler says marketing pigs weighing 210 to 220 pounds is best whether showing or not. Iowa State University expert M. D. Whitaker urges 4-H members to keep pigs growing, not delaying gains. For August shows, pigs should be born late February to early March. Castrate at two weeks old and wean at four to six weeks. After weaning, spray for lice with malathion per directions, worm every 60 days, and group pigs in small, uniform lots with one feeder per four to five pigs. Always provide fresh water. Use 16% protein until 75 pounds, 14% from 75 to 125 pounds, then 12% until show or marketing.

Nine research projects financed by the National Foundation March of Dimes in 1964 show progress in birth defects. Dr. Theodore Boyd noted nearly $5,000,000 allocated for research and 51 birth defect treatment centers. The nine studies include German measles testing, cell abnormalities in Hurler's syndrome, links between mental retardation and congenital anomalies, dysautonomia, ataxia telangiectasia, immune and chromosome defect connections, chromosomal screening methods, G-6-PD enzyme variations, and congenital heart defect development in chick embryos.

Summer Workships in Family Finance Scholarships At 16 Universities
More than 600 scholarships at 16 universities fund the 1965 Summer Workshops in Family Finance. Sponsored by the National Committee for Education in Family Finance, the program aims to improve family finance instruction for teachers and administrators nationwide. Team scholarships pair two to five teachers with an administrator, with curriculum tailored by each university. Lectures, discussions, and daily lab work cover income, budgeting, banking, insurance, Social Security, taxes, wills, and investments. Credit toward a graduate degree is offered on completion. Since inception about 14,000 educators have participated through university grants and in service programs.

Over 475 Iowa high schools join the 16th annual American Citizenship program sponsored by the Iowa State Bar Association and the Iowa State Bar Foundation. In April, schools will recognize seniors for outstanding citizenship with a scroll and bronze medal. The program, led by Richard F.
