The Westfield Community School held its 28th annual Art Show in the school auditorium on April 13 with large attendance. Elementary displays impressed, judged by David Peterson, a University of Vermillion senior art major, who spoke to faculty later. Cookies and refreshments funded the event after the P T A meeting. Awards included multiple ribbons and honorable mentions across Kindergarten through Fourth Grade, with many students highlighted for their arts and crafts.

Government land purchases threaten tax base, says industry leader
C A Gillett of American Forest Products Industries told the National Natural Resources Conference that the federal government owns about one third of U.S. land, warns against needless acquisitions, and urges leasing as an alternative while urging return of land to private ownership to protect local tax bases. He notes 62 million acres of forest lands are open for recreation and calls for reviewing 234 million acres already set aside for rural recreation before buying more.

The Johnson township Farm Bureau ladies met April 14 at Mrs. Donald Lucken’s home. Sixteen members and five visitors attended after opening with the American Farm Bureau Spirit Song. Guest Ethel Rowe joined, and business was led by Mrs. Arthur Netley. A foreign student will visit a weekend at Mr. and Mrs. James Knapp’s home. A special project was discussed. Mrs. Eldon Bryant reported on Mr. Diazz’s County Committee Meeting speech, and Mrs. Robert Less presented a program on Communism, Socialism and Capitalism. Mrs. Dick Jelken led patriotic songs. AHS Hosts Solo and Small Group Music Contest
This year AHS was picked to host the solo and small group contest. Between 750 and 1,000 young people will participate this Friday and Saturday. Akron will have 65 entries. Piano solos on April 24 in High School Auditorium Center No1. Saturday entries in nine centers across locations including Center Nos 1 2 8 4 6 9 Immanuel Lutheran venues. Contest managers and timers are AHS students and faculty. judges chosen by the Iowa High School Music Association.

Science and math teachers rise with new curricula shift
The U S Office of Education survey shows in fall 1961 103 666 teachers taught science or 17 5 percent of secondary staff while 118 298 teachers or 20 percent taught mathematics. Iowa Names Two Students for Senate Youth Program
Two Iowa high school students Barry H. Nemmers and Jerald R. Gerst were chosen to attend the United States Senate Youth Program in January 1964. The effort provides an all expense paid Washington, D.
