Pasture Interseeding Gains Noted by Union County Farmers

Union County Extension Agent Chuck Norby reports pasture interseeding renovates worn pastures with noticeable yield gains. Since 1969 about 1000 acres have been interseeded using furrow planting to establish seedlings and conserve moisture, with alfalfa and intermediate wheatgrass mixes raising forage by 30 to 50 percent within two years. Interest is bolstered by an 80 percent REAP cost share covering machine and seed costs, while local district hire and ASCS guidance aid farmers in applying. Farmers are urged to enroll at the ASCS office within two weeks and visit the Extension Office for details.
