In Plymouth County Spelling Contest held at LeMars on April 1 Eldon Bryant of Johnson township won first in oral spelling while Vesta Vannersdel of Union Consolidated won first in written. Helen Herbst and Ethel Ernst took second in oral and written respectively. Bryant will represent Plymouth County at the State Contest in Des Moines April 27 and Vannersdel and Ernst will represent at the Interstate Contest in Sioux Falls April 19.

Escape Injury As Truck Upsets Near Vermillion
Bernice Boyd and his wife and young son escaped serious harm when a traveling truck developed fire under the footboards and swerved near a high grade. Boyd turned to safety, saved the family, and the cab and truck parts were burnt. The boy suffered a nose bruise. The fire likely started from a shorted electrical wire.

Independent business houses organize in Plymouth County
About 125 Plymouth county representatives from independent stores gathered at the Union Hotel in LeMars last Tuesday evening to form a county organization. Officers named include K. C. Thorson of Akron as chairman, Fred Philips of Remsen as vice chairman, and Ed Tentinger of LeMars as secretary. An executive committee was set, plans discussed, and aims include equalizing taxes among business firms and improving conditions for independent merchants. In a separate item, three men were arrested in Sioux City for suspected chicken theft. Harry Lynn, Tom Sheely, and Melvin Lynn were held after a car linked to the crime was found near Fourth and Virginia streets, with Sheriff Ralph Rippey assisting.

Ruble Man Faces Serious Charges
Henry Ruble, 21, of Ruble in the west county, was arrested this week by Pymorth county officers and jailed. He allegedly stole mail from a carrier's wagon, forging a check for 184 dollars to pay a car dealer. He has prior theft cases, was arraigned before Justice Koenig, and bound over to the April grand jury. Officers report he confessed the theft and forgery. Portland 4-H Club Girls elected officers Mark Graff president and others, outlined this year's program, and shared music and dances from The Bohemian Girl.

Emergency bill would provide old age money
An emergency measure introduced in the Iowa legislature on March 27 would release the 1935 tax payments now being collected for immediate old age pensions. Byron G. Allen says it could allow more than 10,000 pensions to be issued quickly, at about 500 daily, with pensions starting the month after approval and not retroactive.
