Funeral of a Nation's Chief Follows McKinley Death

Canton marked the end of President William McKinley with a funeral attended by 75 000 to 100 000 people from across the United States and abroad. Roosevelt and cabinet led the procession, miles of military and civic honor guards, and wreaths from Italy Haiti Uruguay and many states. The body lay in state, was moved to West Lawn cemetery, and interment awaited beside McKinley's children.

The Procession After McKinley Funeral in Canton

The procession for the late President and funeral party in Canton attracted thousands. The parade stretched from the McKinley residence on North Market to the cemetery. Ohio National Guard units lined the route with roughly eight thousand sailors stationed at about ten feet apart and no public disturbances were reported. Continued on fourth page.

Buffalo dispatch reports preparations for three day trial of Leon Czolgosz, the assassin of President McKinley. His lawyers Judges Lewis and Titus have not prepared a defense as the prisoner refuses to speak, declaring I am an anarchist and I only did my duty. I shot and killed President McKinley, and am prepared to die.

Canton Sept. 20. Crowds filled restaurants and streets with sandwich stands and refreshments as police and soldiers kept order. Visiting press from 600 papers registered at Folwell building, with passes issued through Dol pass lines. free luncheon provided at the Bike club.
