A London correspondent reports from St Lucia that Mount Pelée erupted violently. The city and ships were destroyed in minutes, with charred corpses found and mass casualties reported around the cathedral site and coast.
New York May 12 relief teams in Casttion search ruins after a catastrophe near St Luyliy cathedral. Survivors were few. many bodies found beneath debris as fires rage and investigators risk danger. Rescue work continues amid chaos with storehouses looted and protection measures imposed to prevent further vandalism.
Washington reports from May 11 detail consul Ayme at Martinique describing widespread devastation including the loss of Consul Prentie and Sir, Governor Montiet and others killed. Navy notes Hiiser Cloclunit departed for Martinique and a flotilla from San Juan, Porto Rico, is en route to reinforce.

Washington May 12 Four Ohioans are believed dead in the Martinique disaster. Miss Kittie Sherman of Findlay Mrs William Noyes and her two daughters Dell and June of Chaetnath Meg Sherman and Mrs Noyes are aunts of Mile Pitinin the celebrated ballet dancer who is visiting Washington. The aunts juniors left San Juan Porto Rico three weeks ago for St Pierre Martinique and have not been heard from since. Mile Tittle cable reported their world tour and recent movements among the West Indies. The missing party may have been among victims of the volcanic eruption.
London reports the Colonial Office received a cable from Administrator Hall on Dominica Island. The Martialfine catastrophe appears more severe than previously thought, with details continuing on the second page.
Death occurred Tuesday afternoon when Chester Bullenberger was struck by a train on Miller Avenue Crowing. The boy allegedly rushed into the path while crossing. Interment followed at Mt Hope Cemetery after services at the residence.
Prisoners arraigned before Judge Keller on Monday. Five changed pleas to guilty. sentences follow. Frank E. Puller, 21, of Hudson, jailed four years for embezzling 85 000 from Adams Express. Charles Chase, 18, a mulatto, sent to reform school for taking 60 dollars. Dr J B H Kent, charged with forgery, received one year. Edmond Dalton got two years for horse stealing. Tanner Harris one year for burglary.
The Cuyahoga Wire and Fence Co a new $1,000,000 entity consolidates Cuyahoga Steel and Wire Co of Cuyahoga Falls and Hartman Manufacturing Co of Newcastle. It perfected its organization in New York and assumed control of the two factories. Officers include E A Henry as president Whi Logan as president, Pathery as treasurer, and directors from New York Chicago and Ohio.
Five prisoners fled Rien Jand county jail aided by a girl from Payne’s family. A door-outside view allowed several to slip free as police and dogs pursued. The crowd hindered efforts, but all but one of the escapees were captured. Names listed include Burkehart Mockiow Melchier Hou and Burhert.
An agent for the United States Department of Labor is in Akron to obtain statistics for an annual bulletin. Working in the City Clerk’s office, the agent will stay several days collecting data from all city departments.
Scranton, May 12 Mine workers say the three anthracite districts are fully tied up with about 140 000 idle workers. The Delaware Lackawanna & Western says it will not lock out workers and will not act until after Wednesday. Coal shipments halted. orders must be approved by the coal department head. Mitchell notes the strike aim remains student. No further details available.
Two youths identified as O4 Rommers and Loomis hired a bicycle at Dillon Cycle Co and vanished. Police traced them to a Chextout Street residence where they also left $20 in unpaid board bills. Authorities in other cities were alerted to watch for the men and the stolen wheels.
