Fire kills nine in Chicago hotel blaze
Fire swept the Hotel Woodruff complex in a building once known as Motel Lancaster. Nine men and one woman died and about thirty were injured as delirium tremens patients and drug addicts faced the flames on the fifth floor. Rescue efforts failed for many upper-floor occupants as the elevator shaft accelerated the inferno. Alderman Kent and his attendant Wattles narrowly escaped after Wattles lowered him from a window and guided others to safety. Kent died from injuries shortly after. The blaze began in the basement and spread rapidly, despite quick arrival of the fire department and ambulances.
