London June 7 A committee report on Military Education and Training harshly criticizes British officers from every rank. It finds junior officers deficient in basic military knowledge and motivation, condemns Woolwich and Sandhurst education, and urges tangible rewards for excellence rather than social advancement to raise standards.
City officials at a Friday meeting discussed selling the site of the burned old City Building. A bid of 14,000 dollars tops offers so far, with a frontage extend from 60 to 76 feet on South Main Street. Court sealed bids may be invited after another council and commission meeting Monday night.
Brady, son of Cyrus Brady owner of Summit Lake Park, drank arsenite in beer at Doll's saloon in Halo early Friday. He became very ill but was saved by Dr. Burt Mhodentaugh and Dr. Brown of Barberton with a stomach pump. Reports say he acted from despondency over a Barberton woman who is married and promised divorce, plus financial woes and a failed park-front loan.
Mayor Doyle upholds that Akron Fire Department and ambulance drivers face arrest for fast driving under a strict city ordinance. The Hudt case, involving an O.T. Company employee, argued the law was invalid for lacking exceptions to relieve suffering or protect property. The mayor overruled the demurrer, affirming the ordinance as constitutional and applicable to all without exemptions. The Hudt case was continued.
City Commissioners deny Oliver D. Sense a $15 claim for injuries after a bicycle incident at an open intersection. Commissioner Wilson comments on the scene and notes the gutter is shallow while a bystander remarks on safety and visibility.
At the Universalist State convention in Greenville delegates elected to the National conference of the Young People's Christian Union. Rev Edward G Mason joined the National YP U board. several Akron men endorsed as Buchtel College trustees. Akron attendees included Mrs A E Moon and Mrs Emma Hubbard.
The Lakeside bill promises a daring outdoor novelty act called Mille Deaco. The performance includes electric light effects and an imagined wild display, touted as a standout attraction for the venue.
In Cleveland the Indiana convention nominated L. B. Winch for Circuit Judge with a three vote margin over Caldwell. The Cuyahoga county delegation split seventy seven for Winch and seven for Galaswell, reversing expectations as Caldwell faced renewed opposition. Winch had prior runs for the seat.
The National Blank Book company was incorporated at Columbia. The incorporators are Weah Marple, P.M. Weeks, B.C. Moxter, I.8. Uvidell, and W. Alling. The company will manufacture blank book records, indexes, office and wood miscellaneous supplies, and also office furniture.
Wilkesbarre scene reports the hanging of an effigy in protest and crowd violence as miners’ strike tensions persist in the Wyoming valley. Police dispersed about a thousand people after the mock execution. Nearby towns remain quiet amid ongoing coal mine labor turmoil and water supply disputes. Four lawmen linked to a fatal shooting at Stanton colliery face further hearing as a boy’s grave injury fuels fear.
Akron Odd Fellows prepare a statewide picnic at Electric Park Lake Bowly on a date in June. All Akron lodges join, invitations sent to Northeast Ohio lodges, and a large attendance is expected.
Mrs Caroline Koehn 51 wife of August Koehn of 416 Sherman died Friday night June 6 after a long illness. Born in Germany she had lived in the city for 20 years. Funeral from the residence Monday at 1 pm with services at the German church. Interment in Glendate cemetery.
The Mytorprise Man employees plan a gathering at Lake Rady next Saturday, June 14. A special team will depart Union Station at 5:30 a.m. The rate will be lower for round trip travel. Friends are invited.
The funeral of Walter J. Otey will be held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Wiehels, 170 Washington St., at 2 o clock on holiday afternoon. He resided in Hennett, a suburb of Pittsburgh, and left a wife and several children. The Alena bars may have charge of the arrangements.
The Akron beach of the Lake Hirle College alumnae held its annual business and octal meeting today at the home of Mrs Gee Kant Buchteage. Attendees included Akron and nearby districts and alumnae Willongiby seminary, mother of Lake Erie gallery. Lunch was served.
Abe Williams persistently presses Akron city officials to approve a public bath house along the canal south of South Street. He proposes a Wottie costing about 200 dollars with ten rooms, funded by sales of salts and a 25 cent or 15 cent swimmer fee, to be run by him and his wife who are trained swimmers. Commissioners remain undecided on action.
President holds talks with Senator Hanna at the White House and signals willingness to act toward ending the coal strike. He will consult Labor Commissioner Carroll W. Weight for views and consider possible steps, with further conferences expected and readiness to assist in settling employer and worker differences.

The Young Men's Christian Association group met at the Windsor hotel to approve a Committee of Management. Members include Judge B. W. Sturt, S. 1 Pitkin, C. C. Goodneh, J. 1 Miller, Nathan Marge, and others. They plan to organize, elect officers, and advance site, building, and secretary duties while pursuing a $10,000 fund raise.
Rev. W. Harpster, pastor of the First United Evangelical church, plans a two story building on South Main Street opposite the street car line. The second floor will host a hall for Evangelical Mission meetings recently organized by the pastor. The venture includes private enterprise with three story rooms on the first floor. Since arriving in Akron, Harpster has grown church and Sunday school membership to about 100 and 250 respectively.

Residents repeatedly fail to fund the water supply while the city contemplates maintaining or abandoning the fountains.
