London reels as reports say General Buller ordered a frontal attack at Modder River or near Pastdeberg, with hundreds dead or wounded. Roberts prepares to march on the Free State capital while Buller withholds full casualty figures, and Irish regiments suffer heavy losses in grueling combat.
London dispatch reports General Buller describing losses as not large and less than they would have been after assaults near Langewatche Spruit and Peters Hill. Troops endured shellfire but remained orderly as they attacked entrenched positions and carried high ground on Feb. 27 and 26 during the Wakkerstroom theater of operations.
Reports from Cape Town describe Roberts’ captured heavy guns hindering rapid British advance toward Pretoria. Paardeberg actions are noted with regiments marching long distances. Nearby Modder River surrenders lead to 600 Boers arriving in town, kept in guarded wire enclosures.
London dispatches report the cry on to Bloemfontein as Roberts and Kitchener remain near Paarl to rest troops. A smaller Crone force at Magersfontein allows thousands to escape toward Bloemfontein. Cronje’s big guns were saved.
Bridgeport Conn February 28 General Miles calls Cronje surrender expected and says it strengthens the Transvaal patriots cause. He notes 4,000 Boer defenders held for over a week against 4,000 British troops and questions reports of 9,000 Boer forces. He admires the Boers regardless of sympathies.
New York Sun reports the Boer commando of Barliay in Bart Cape Colony offered to surrender if the safety of Dutch colonists allied with the Boers could be guaranteed. The British commander replied that surrender would be unconditional and accepted only with assurances of safety.
Vienna February 24 to April 1. Herr Bloch, the noted military writer, states in a published article that the Boer resistance persists and England would do well to seek peace. He argues the war remains costly and unresolved for both sides.
London reports the South Mayo by election to fill Mr Michael Davitt's seat. John O Donnell wins with 2401 votes against Major McBride who has 427 while McBride serves with the Irish Brigade in the Boer War. Cape Town notes the Afrikander Bond Congress postponement due to martial law in several districts.
Washington February 28 The Upham Brouse Co reports both sides confident as Porto Rico bill awaited in the House amid uncertainty. Leaders foresee possible defeat with Republicans split and Democrats leaning yes. Whips Tawney and Underwood clash over absences and paired votes as midmorning floor activity grows tense.

A Columbus despatch reports the Diamond Rubber Company Bann Association of Akron is incorporated with officers M A Mlynn J M Straub A M Elliott Adolph Oberdoerster Frank Coyle and Chris Heller. The band aims for 50 members and to be a leading Northern Ohio organization. a meeting is planned and Capt J St Bryaub may be elected leader.
Johnston Ohio February 27 wedding bells may ring Saturday evening as Clyde O Bager and Cliva Elma Baughman unite in marriage at the bride’s mother’s home in Hometown. The ceremony led by Rev Shaft with Prof Arthur B Nice, a supper and music followed. The couple will reside in Johnson with many gifts and best wishes. An auction of local real estate closes Wednesday.
The Waslington birthday event drew an appreciative audience and benefited the Mandolin and Guitar club. Mrs. William Cline and daughter Le Ita of Maple Valley visited Thursday with friends, while Miss Crispin stayed at home. Ava and Arthur Whither and Grover Rumple are also listed as attending.
