Dispatches from London and Spearman's Camp detail heavy casualties and a costly stalemate at Potgieter Drift and nearby positions. Reports from Feb 6 to 8 describe Boer defences holding, British assaults at Vaalkrantz and Beekfontein, and renewed shelling with significant losses on both sides.
Special correspondence from Columbus reports Gov Nash delaying announcement of Ohio penitentiary Board of Managers successors after resignations. Akron's Capt Aaron Wagoner is favored by insiders, with others named as H J Griffiths and Julius Whiting. Wagoner earlier declined Insurance Commissioner post but may be chosen for the board. note on upcoming eighth-page continuation mentions transport of heavy material by aerial tramway and rapid testing and deployment. Also notes Indian and colonial war fund contributions and hospital ship Maine sailing with wounded returning from Spionkop and Colenso.”
General Lawton's body, escorted by a military guard of honor and the officer's widow and children, arrived in Washington at 4:30 this morning. The procession through Pennsylvania Avenue, with Troop H of the Third Cavalry, preceded the body to the Church of the Covenant for the funeral set for tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
Depositions are being taken in Scranton in the case of Mrs. Joseph K. Dixon against the widow of former Congressman Samuel Amerman. The suit seeks $40,000 for alienation of affection of Rev. Dr. Joseph K. Dixon. Witnesses from the Pennsylvania Age Baptist Church testified that relations with Mrs. Amerman were platonic while noting public controversy and Dixon’s Boston pastorate dismissal.
Louisville attorney Thomas C. Campbell said Goebel’s assassination was part of a larger conspiracy. He argues the crime mirrors Caesar’s, not lone acts by cranks, and asserts the murder was planned by powerful figures with protection from others. He predicts the conspirators will be punished.
The son of Henry H. Havemeyer, sugar trust magnate, William Moller Havemeyer, died in Buenos Ayres on February 6 after a year of paralysis. He had lived a fast, excess filled life and his sudden death at a young age was reported in New York.
Charles Everson Macrum, former United States Consul General at Pretoria, declined most questions about Pretoria as war looms. He noted little change in Johannesburg amid the Great Britain and Boer conflict, remarking that business there continues despite the war and asking about Boer views.
Washington February 8 Senate Commerce committees favor a bill to establish a new Department of Commerce and Industries headed by a cabinet level appointee. The proposal would reorganize agencies to promote growth, trade and industrial policy under a single department, with a senior official to join the Cabinet.
