National Debt Tops One Trillion Dollars for First Time
The Senate approved increasing the debt ceiling from 985 billion to 1.079 trillion dollars in a 64 to 34 vote. Reagan will sign, with the measure taking effect at the new fiscal year start, allowing continued borrowing to pay bills.
