National Debt Tops One Trillion Dollars for First Time
The Senate approved increasing the debt ceiling from 985 billion to 1.079 trillion dollars in a 64 to 34 vote. Reagan will sign, with the measure taking effect at the new fiscal year start, allowing continued borrowing to pay bills. The nation's debt has grown from 1.225 billion in 1916 to 752 billion in 1978.
