Claude Kirk won renomination in a runoff, defeating Jack Eckerd 195,863 to 149,191. He will face state Senator Rubin Askew, who won the Democratic nomination over Earl Faircloth on a platform of corporate income tax reform and tax relief for citizens.
Burl Ives, 61, folk singer and actor, files for divorce from Helen Ives in Los Angeles Superior Court citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, married in Chicago, have lived apart since 1956. Mrs Ives is a writer based in New York City.

The Senate Finance Committee approved a provision boosting benefits for 3.3 million widows and widowers by 700 million dollars annually.
