W F Woodhead of Kalmia Circle nearly won this week's Standard Stumper with 933 entries. His entry had two incorrect letters changing brushed to crushed and crises to crimes. Bonnie Goshorn of Whiskey Road would have won more by placing health and glide correctly. The $270 puzzle deadline is Wednesday with solution on page 9.
A federal grand jury indicts four men on the FBI most-wanted list in connection with the August 24 bombing at the University of Wisconsin Army Mathematics Research Center. Karleton Armstrong Dwight Burt Leo Burt and David Fine are accused of civil rights violations by interfering with federally funded education activities.
A 65 year legal battle ended as Judge Louis Rosenberg blocked the use of Budweiser by Du Bois Brewing Co. DuBois Pa. and Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis fought over the trademark since 1905 with earlier use by Anheuser-Busch dating to 1886. Previous accords limiting DuBois sales were marred by violations.
A 6 foot python escaped from its cage Wednesday in Ojai California. Owner Wally Fuller described the reptile as mean and authorities conducted a search for the animal. Officials advised residents that pythons often favor trees and offered cautionary tips to stay still if the snake drops from a branch.
Hanover Park village board passed a midiskirt ban seen as a joke but now police say women fear going outdoors for arrest risk. Police Chief Sam Pollotto notes residents feel targeted by the resolution that claims it defends a male right to observe the female form.
The FDA suggests all eyeglasses use shatter-proof lenses to cut injuries from 120000 yearly. Laminated or tempered lenses could raise costs by 1 to 6 dollars per pair. The rule would take effect after industry and public comment.
In Fort Wayne Indiana Judge Jesse Eschbach presided as Frank Conley 47 of Laotto pleaded guilty to owning and operating a still. Conley described the corn liquor recipe and judge commented it sounded like a good recipe. Conley warned he would not advise the judge to drink it.
Police responded to a Fort Wayne reports of about 15 monkeys roaming a neighborhood yard. Zoo officials could not recapture the animals.

Aiken County voters will face multiple ballots on November 3 including national state and county offices, five proposed amendments to the state constitution, seven revisions to the constitution, and the proposed county council method. The revisions aim to modernize 1895 provisions with article by article changes including new protections for privacy and due process. Article 2 consolidates voting rules removing the male prerequisite and shortens residency for registration to six months in state and three months locally.

North Vietnamese and Viet Cong losses reported in the past week reach 1,457, with Cambodia’s routes 4 and 5 under heavy attack near Phnom Penh and Kompong Chhnang.

The National Achievement Scholarship program announced three Aiken County students as semifinalists Maurice C. Wimberly of Aiken High Annie F Langford of Aiken Schofield and Denise D Weston Langley High School They are among 36 000 participants from 4 800 schools nationwide and compete for awards from 250 to 1500 annually funded by a 7 million Ford Foundation grant in 1964.
The South Carolina Budget Board heard requests from state agencies on 1971-72 funds as well as a $1,500 per year teacher pay raise pushed by the SCEA. The move, led by F. E. DuBose, targets improving education funding amid austerity. Rep. Albert Watson attended the hearings and pledged support if elected. Also discussed were juvenile corrections needing a 90 percent budget boost to attract qualified staff, with a $3.2 million request for next year.
